Roberts' Success at the Plate Propels ULM Over Georgia Southern, 7-5

STATESBORO, Ga. – Rochelle Roberts is the consistency that the ULM softball team has been striving for all season. The senior out of California finished 2-4 on the day with three RBI and two runs scored, making her responsible for five of the Warhawks seven runs in ULM's 7-5 win over Georgia Southern on Sunday (Mar.25).

After dropping game one and two of the Warhawk-Eagle series, ULM was on the hunt for a win on Sunday. The Warhawks previously fell to the Eagles in a double-header on Saturday (Mar.24), defeated by Georgia Southern when the ULM gave up late-game leads in both games.

Paige Murray goes in the book as the winning pitcher, and after pitching a complete game yesterday (Mar.24) turned around pitch six complete innings, allowing only two runs on six hits.

"Paige deserves a ton of credit," said head coach Corey Lyon. "Coming back today and giving her team a chance to win, that's what we needed and she brought it today in the circle."

Georgia Southern scored first for the first time in the series, after a solo-home run by sophomore Shelby Wilson put the Eagles on the board in the first inning.

The Warhawks (13-13, 3-6) responded in the second inning, when junior Brie Wrobel singled through the right side to score sophomore Cheyanne Lyon who reached on a single herself earlier that inning.

The Eagles (21-10, 6-3) didn't let the tie last long, off the bat of Georgia Southern's Macy Coleman can another solo-home run for GS, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead after two innings of work.

ULM would tie it up again in the fourth inning, this time when Roberts stole home after reaching on a fielder's choice. Roberts advanced to third and into scoring position after Lyon connected on a single up the middle.

The score would stay tied at 2-2 through the fifth inning, but in the top of the sixth, Roberts came in clutch again, with a single out to center-field. Her hit would score Jayden Mount and advanced Hunter Hogan to third base and into scoring position.

Roberts stole second after a Georgia Southern pitching change and in comes Lyon, who earned her third hit of the day with a two-RBI single to right field- scoring Hogan and Roberts on the play.

The Warhawks would hold the Eagles scoreless again in the sixth inning, before tacking on two-insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Once again, Roberts would be the one to step up to the plate and ring in those runs with a single to center-field.

"A lot of kids stepped up and made plays for us to win today," Lyon said. "We need to hold onto the feeling and build off this momentum and keep it rolling to next week's games."

Georgia Southern would make an attempt to cut away at ULM's 7-2 lead in the seventh inning with back-to-back singles that would end up scoring three more runs for the Eagles, but the Warhawks prevailed, taking home the 7-5 win.

ULM finished with ten team hits, with Hunter Hogan and Lyon walking away with three hits on four at bats a piece.

The Warhawks will face Jackson State on Wednesday (Mar.28) in a non-conference double-header. Game times and links to live stats and more can be found at ULMWarhawks.com.
