Lyon's Walk-Off Grand Slam Wins the Series for ULM

MONROE, La. – The Warhawks have done it, their first Sun Belt series – thanks to the theatrics of senior Cheyanne Lyon, whose walk-off grand-slam gave ULM the 12-9 win in game two and secured the series for the Warhawks.

"Offensively, the fact we can score so many different ways makes us a very scary team," said head softball coach Corey Lyon "The top of the line-up did their thing and got everything rolling."

"Megan Shaw had a great day at the plate and it was pretty amazing to see Cheyanne step up and hit a walk off Grand Slam. That's pretty special," Lyon said.

ULM kicked off the day with a six-inning shutout over CCU, scoring eight runs on ten hits. Senior Paige Murray pitched the complete six innings, allowing only five hits in the process; Murray is now 9-3 this season without allowing a single run and striking out nine over her last three appearances.

Lyon has called on Murray as a primary starter and she has excelled in the position, "Paige has really stepped up her game in the last week. She has really come up big for her team."

Rochelle Roberts would be the first to earn an RBI, with a first inning ground out to second base, the senior out of California would score Sydney McKay who reached on a single back to the pitcher to lead off the inning.

The hits continued to roll in for the Hawks, as center fielder Hunter Hogan tripled in the third inning followed by a single to right-center by Roberts. The back-to-back hits would score two more as ULM led 3-0 after three innings.

Two innings later and the Warhawks would add to their lead with a bases-loaded walk for Lyon and a wild pitch by the Chanticleers in which Hunter Hogan took advantage of the gap and scored.

ULM would score its final three runs in the sixth inning. Hunter Hogan connected on a sacrifice fly to left field and score Jaclyn Kresta who reached on a single to start the inning. Following Hogan at the plate was Roberts who walked and joined Mount on base.

With two runners on, Lyon laid down a single that gave Jayden Mount the opportunity to score. The game ending run came off the bat of Jessie Watts, who's left-center RBI single would score Roberts and end the game.

Game two was a bit of a power struggle for the two teams, as both seemed to have trouble keeping the opposing team off the board.

Again, ULM struck first, when Lyon's double scored Roberts and McKay to give the Hawks a two-run lead in the first inning. McKay led off the game with a double, and Roberts came just behind her with a single to the short-stop that would put McKay in scoring position.

Coastal would build off a one-run second inning in the third, putting up three more runs on the board with a home run by Chanticleer Courtney Dean.

Trailing 4-2, ULM answered with back-to-back walks in the third with the bases loaded that added two more runs to the Warhawks line. A single down the left-field line by Megan Shaw scored two more and the Hawks are back on top, 6-4.

The Chanticleers continued to slam the Warhawk pitching staff with hard hit ball after hard hit ball; in the fifth inning, CCU reclaimed the lead with an RBI single and another three-run home run.

ULM tied the score once again in the bottom of the inning. Shaw 's single to left field scored Victoria Pederson, who was called on to pinch run for Lyon. Mount would be hit by a pitch later that inning after a Chanticleer pitching change, her base would push Madison Morrison, who was in as a pinch-runner for Brie Wrobel.

The sixth inning was seemingly the hardest to take in. With a tied ballgame, and go-ahead runs on base, head coach Corey Lyon looked to Murray to keep the Warhawks safe.

Coastal managed one more run before the end of the inning, with a double that gave them a one-run, 9-8 lead headed into the bottom of the sixth.

ULM seemed stuck, with no action in the bottom of the inning, but the Hawks were able to sit the Chanticleers down in order in the top of the 7th, giving the team one last chance to take the game.

With Mount on third, Hunter Hogan on second, and Roberts on first, Lyon stepped up to the plate and let it rip, out, over the right-field fence and into oblivion- scoring four runs, and claiming the game two win and the series from CCU.

The Warhawks are now 5-6 in conference play and 17-13 after today's double-header win. The victory marks ULM's first SBC series of the season. ULM will play game three tomorrow at 12 PM.
