Softball Drops Series Opener to Texas State, 7-0

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State Bobcat softball team had its way with the ULM softball pitching staff tonight, scoring all seven of their runs off three hits across the first five innings of play in their 7-0 shutout of the Warhawks on Saturday (April 21).

"The numbers don't look good but I actually wasn't that disappointed with our effort at the plate today," said head softball coach Corey Lyon. "We stayed in plan for the most part, were aggressive and hit some balls hard, but they made some nice plays, that's all that's to it."

ULM (23-19, 9-10)  did earn three hits in the loss, two off the bat of sophomore three-hole hitter Jayden Mount. Mount and teammate Brie Wrobel both reached in the first inning, but wouldn't advance past second before senior Cheyanne Lyon popped up to shortstop, ending the inning.

Texas State's Ortiz connected on a 3-2 pitch, sending it far over the left-center wall for a two-run RBI, giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.

Victoria Pederson reached on a single in the second, but was caught stealing on the next play, ending the Warhawks chance of scoring in the second.

A bases loaded triple by Cranek on a 1-1 count in the bottom fo the second inning would extend the Bobcat's lead to 5-0, forcing ULM to kick it into high gear if they were to avoid a run-rule situation.

One inning later, Mount reached first again, but was stranded after Texas State starting pitcher Randi Rupp forced a two-out pop fly from Wrobel.

Lyon was hit by pitch in the fourth inning, but a fielder's choice would send her back to the dugout. The Bobcats sat down the next two Warhawks and ULM was headed into the fifth still trailing 5-0.

The Warhawks went down in the order in the fifth, but TXST made one last statement in the bottom of the inning, with another home run- this one from Oltmann in center field.

Neither team had any additional action in the sixth, and trailing 7-0 with one last chance to get back in the game, ULM headed into the seventh with hopes of putting runs on the board. Unfortunately, the Warhawks came up short and went down in the order for the second inning in a row.

"We have to be better in the circle to succeed tomorrow, we gave up five runs with two outs and two home runs. We plan to regroup this evening and come out tomorrow ready to go," Lyon said.

ULM will face Texas State in a double-header, tomorrow (April 22) starting at 12 p.m. Links to live stats and video are available at ULMWarhawks.com.
