MONROE, La. - The ULM Warhawks play their final non-conference games of the season when they host Lamar University for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Wednesday in a rematch of last year's National Invitational Softball Championship regional finals.
Â
The Cardinals rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to claim a 3-2 win in the championship game onÂ
Shelby Henderson's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh. That win came after ULM scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh earlier in the day for a 2-1 win over LU to set up the winner-take-all game.
This season, both the Warhawks (23-21) and the Cardinals (24-24) are looking to get back on track heading into the final weeks of the regular season. While Lamar has dropped five straight, the Warhawks are looking to revive themselves from four consecutive losses.
Both teams have 9-12 records in their respective conferences.Â
ULM is in seventh place in the 10-team Sun Belt Conference, looking to secure a place in the eight-team Sun Belt tournament. Lamer is in ninth place in the Southland Conference, one game behind eighth-place Sam Houston State in the chase for the final spot in the conference tourney.Â
The Warhawks will no doubt be showing off their nation's 21st-best batting average (.315) on Wednesday; highlight their efforts at the plate is junior
Sydney McKay, who leads ULM with a .406 batting average, while sophomore
Jayden Mount is batting an impressive .397.Â
Senior
Rochelle Roberts and Mount are arguably the most efficient base runners in the Sun Belt; Roberts with a league high 19 stolen bases and Mount with an on base percentage of .581, the two are sure to cause the Cardinal defense issues on Wednesday.
ULM holds a 17-8 lead in the series, including games played from 1984-87. Since LU revived its softball program in 2013, the Cardinals are 3-4 against the Warhawks. Last season, LU went 2-1 against ULM in the NISC regionals.
