ULM Soccer On The Road for 2018 Season Opener

Soccer
MONROE, La. – The ULM women's soccer team is kicking-off the 2018 campaign in Jacksonville, Alabama on Friday (Aug. 17) with a 7 p.m. match against Jacksonville State.

The Warhawks are looking to bounce back, after a lack-luster performance at Stephen F Austin on Friday (Aug. 10), resulting in a 4-0 loss for ULM.

Head soccer coach Keyton Wheelock is confident in her team's ability to compete this season. "All the right skills and technical ability are there, this is the most fit and athletically skilled team I've coached at ULM and their potential to succeed is extremely high."

Wheelock mentioned that against SFA, the Warhawks struggled to execute their set corner kick plays, on both offense and defense, which gave the Lumberjacks all the leverage they needed.

Jacksonville State is also coming off an exhibition loss, after dropping a 3-0 decision to UAB on Friday (Aug. 12). The Gamecocks finished with a plus-four advantage in total shots over the Blazers, 12-8, but UAB capitalized on only five shots on goal for its three scores.

The Jacksonville State goalkeeping unit is young, comprised of red-shirt freshman Morgan Lerch, who earned the starting spot against UAB, and two incoming freshmen.

In comparison, ULM brings back the Sun Belt's leading goalkeeper for saves in senior Brooke-Lynn Scroggins. On the depth chart, freshman Bre Truscott follows Scroggins and is expected to see the pitch quite a bit this season.

Also returning for the Warhawks from the 2017 starting 11 are defender Alexandria Skidmore and midfield/forward Shekinah Wells. Both Skidmore and Wells caught the eye of opposing coaches last season, and have only come back stronger, faster, and smarter this season.

In last year's meeting, which was the first of the series, the Gamecocks were able to score twice in the final 26 minutes of the match. The Warhawks fell 2-0, managing only four total shots.
