MONROE, La – Sun Belt play is upon the ULM soccer program, slated to play Texas State under the lights in San Marcos, Texas on Friday. The Warhawks are looking to turn the tables on Friday, still on the hunt for their first win of the 2018 campaign.
"The girls are working tirelessly in practice and in the weight room," said third-year head coach
Keyton Wheelock. "We start what we call our 'second season' on Friday. Season one is non-conference, season two is conference play. It's a fresh start, a clean slate and we're ready to buckle down and get to work."
ULM (0-7) is traveling west after a recent match with I-20 rival Grambling was canceled mid-match due to field conditions after a quick downpour in Monroe.
By the time the Warhawks started conference play in the previous season, ULM had only managed two goals. This year, with the help of three different freshmen Warhawks, ULM has doubled that number.
Freshman
Mackenzie Bell was the last Warhawk to score, tallying two goals and an almost hat-trick in a 5-2 loss to Northwestern State earlier this season.
In the goal for ULM, senior
Brooke-Lynn Scroggins and freshman
Bre Truscott have split the schedule with three and four goals in the net respectively. Truscott leads the two with a .711 save percentage behind her 32 saves. As a unit, ULM leads the Sun Belt with 54 saves.
ULM trails in the all-time series against Texas State, 6-12-1 after a 3-0 loss to the Bobcats in 2017. Former Warhawk
Randi Lundquist was the only ULM player to get a shot on goal in the loss.
Texas State (2-5) most recently matched up against in-state opponent No.18 Texas, falling to the Longhorns in Austin 2-1. The Bobcats struck first, with a goal by Kaylee Davis in the 15
th minute of the first half, but the Longhorns bounced back with two goals in at 26:39 and 35:30 to take a 2-1 lead at the half that would stand until the horn at the end of regulation.
Davis, a junior forward for Texas State leads the Bobcats with three goals and 21 total shots. Davis was recently selected as the offensive player of the week after her performance against Texas.
Also serving as a threat against the ULM defense is Jordan Kondikoff. The junior from Mesquite, Texas is just behind Davis with two goals of her own and two assists as well.
The Warhawks will follow their Friday match against Texas State with a road match at Arkansas State on Friday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m.
Texas State head coach Kat Conner and her Bobcats will be hosting ULM for their second annual Goals2Cure initiative, a charitable promotion to raise ovarian cancer awareness and funds in support of women fighting ovarian cancer.
To help support these women in need, the coaches and team are collecting pledges for each goal scored this season. Donations will go directly to benefit a scholarship through the Texas Oncology Foundation. Links to donate to the cause are located on the 2018 soccer schedule page at ULMWarhawks.com.
