MONROE, La. – The ULM volleyball team is finally opening up its home season. This Friday (Sept. 14), the Warhawks will play host to Grambling State and the Lady Tigers in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. Admission is free to all ULM home matches.
Free pizza will be available to students with their student ID between set two and three. Giveaways and other promotional items will be up for grabs throughout the match as well, so get there early and get a good seat!
The Warhawks are looking for their third consecutive win, after sweeping both North Alabama and Tennessee Tech at the Memphis Invitational (Sept. 7-8).
"It's been a highly competitive week during practice," said head volleyball coach
Russ Friedland. "The girls' energy is through the roof and they have all been giving their all in practice during intersquad competition in preparation for Friday."
Grambling (1-11) is slated to play ULM in its fourth match in six days. The Lady Tigers recently claimed their first win of the season on Tuesday (Sept. 11), with a 3-0 victory over NAIA opponent Jarvis Christian College.
The Lady Tigers have tallied only 357 kills in 1,153 attempts this season, for a combined .101 hitting percentage. To compare, Grambling's opponents have racked up 554 kills behind a .313 hitting percentage.
GSU is led on the court by Kevreion Ward with 94 kills with L'Muriell Thrower earning 161 of the Lady Tigers 332 assists.
ULM is headed into Friday's home opener currently ranked ninth in the Sun Belt, two wins ahead of Georgia State (2-7).
Senior middle blocker
Taylor Wood still leads the conference with 44 total blocks and 1.52 blocks per set, an average that also ranks her twelfth in Division I.
Senior teammate
Catherine Griffith's .722 attack percentage against Mississippi Valley State earlier this year still stands as one of the best among players in the league as well. Griffith is currently second among Warhawks with 74 kills, just behind freshman
Kate Blasingame who has 86 of her own.
The last time the Warhawks and Lady Tigers met was in 2015, when ULM defeated GSU in a 3-0 decision; seniors
Sarah Woods,
Presleigh Williams, and
Tara Jenkins all had a part in the sweep.
