MONROE, La. – The ULM women's basketball team has its eyes set on Georgia State after a key buzzer-beating win against Georgia Southern on Thursday (Jan. 10). The Warhawks (7-7, 1-2) will tip-off against the Panthers (7-7, 1-2) at noon on Saturday (Jan. 12). Free hot dogs for the first 300 fans to claim their seat at Fant-Ewing, doors open at 11 a.m.
Thursday night's game between ULM and Georgia Southern had three ties and 15 lead changes. The last lead change came at the final horn, as sophomore guard
Arsula Clark scored on a layup from the right block to give ULM the 58-57 victory. Redshirt freshman guard
Tiara Malone kept ULM within striking distance.
Georgia State has dropped back-to-back games after Thursday's 57-54 loss in Lafayette to the Ragin' Cajuns. The Panthers won their Sun Belt opener against UTA on Jan. 3, 50-48, before dropping Saturday's game to Texas State, 69-60. Georgia State won its first three games of the season. The Panthers have now dropped three of their last four games overall
Clark leads the Warhawks with 12.8 points per game, followed by junior transfers
Lauren Fitch (10.2 ppg) and
Amber Thompson (8.6 ppg).
Redshirt sophomore guard Jada Lewis leads the Panthers in scoring and is the third leading scorer in the Sun Belt Conference at 16.8 points per game. Lewis scored 22 points against the Ragin' Cajuns on Thursday, and has topped 20 points four times this season with a season-high of 30 against North Carolina Central. Lewis also leads the team in steals with 28 and is tied for the team lead in assists at 2.3 per game.
ULM continues to compare well statistically against the rest of the Sun Belt Conference on the defensive end of the floor. ULM ranks first in scoring defense (58.3 points per game), second in blocks (3.9 per game) and third in field goal percentage defense and 3-point field goal percentage defense.
The Panthers have one of the top shot blockers in the conference in junior Shaquanda Miller-McCray. Miller-McCray has blocked 25 shots on the season to rank second in the Sun Belt Conference at a clip of 1.8 per game.
Saturday's game is the 10th all-time meeting between the Warhawks and Panthers, with all 10 meetings coming since Georgia State joined the Sun Belt Conference prior to the 2014-15 season. Georgia State won the first five meetings, but the Panthers have lost their last two games in Monroe, last coming on Jan. 14, 2017.
