ULM Softball Dominates Fall Schedule

Softball
MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team finished its fall exhibition schedule with a record of 7-0-1 while five players hit over .400.

"This was a very exciting fall for our program," head coach Molly Fichtner said. "This was the first full fall our coaching staff has had with the team, and we worked extremely hard and did a ton of game-like situations."

The Warhawks played in three games against a division one program, two games against Tyler Junior College, who reached the JUCO Nationals last year, and two games against a team that defeated ULM last fall.

"I wanted to create more competition this fall between practices and our fall opponents," Fichtner said.

The Warhawks boast a young, talented team that includes only three seniors and four juniors. Ten players hit over .300 over eight fall games, five players hit over .400 and three players hit over .500. As a team, ULM had a .391 batting average.

Veterans Korie Kreps, Jayden Mount and Jessie Watts paced the fall lineup. Kreps hit a team-leading .560 in the fall, followed by Mount at .500 and Watts .474.

Outfielder LeLe Anderson, a transfer from Wallace State Community College, hit at a .538 clip and recorded 10 stolen bases. Another transfer, Kennedy Johnson, who led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with her .300 batting average as a freshman in 2019, batted .409.

Freshman Jacelyn Buck saw the majority of her playing time spent at shortstop in the fall and hit .381.

ULM scored an average of 8.4 runs per game in the fall while outscoring its opponents, 67-22.

"We are continuing to build every single day to get where we need to be," Fichtner said. "This team has a spark, and I can't wait to get it lit in the spring."

The pitching staff also made great strides during the fall schedule. Returners Murphy Williams, Watts and Karly Taranto all threw extensive innings. Amber Coons, a transfer from McNeese State, also saw time in the circle. The four pitchers had a combined ERA of 2.25 – half of what the team posted last spring.

"Our goal last year was to learn to work," Fichtner said. "The goal this year is to learn to win. The entire team and staff have bought into this mission, and we're all impatiently waiting to take the field in the spring."
