MONROE, La. – The ULM Warhawks hosted conference foe Coastal Carolina on Friday, but fell to the Chanticleers in a 3-0 sweep at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
"I'm really proud of our performance tonight," head coach Charlie Olson said. "We fought with one of the best teams in our conference."
Coastal Carolina (13-2, 3-0 Sun Belt) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set before Ina Gosen got the Warhawks (9-9, 0-3 Sun Belt) on the board with a kill. ULM fought back and a kill by Cali Assaley tied the set at six. The Chanticleers went on to score eight unanswered points until a kill by Kate Blasingame got the Warhawks back on track. Coastal Carolina would maintain the lead and win set one, 25-18.
Another kill by Gosen gave ULM the first point of set two. The Chanticleers jumped out in front and the Warhawks trailed for most of the second set. On the back of a big night for Lauren Appelman, ULM regained some momentum.
"Anytime we can have someone come off the bench and have a big game, it's a great thing," Olson said.
The Warhawks would come back and three straight service aces by Albany Schaffer brought ULM within three. However, Coastal Carolina pulled out set two, 25-22.
The Warhawks jumped out to a lead in the third set, but the Chanticleers came back and tied the set up at 15 with a kill by Ilse Sinnige. A few points later, Appelman would nail another kill to give ULM a 19-18 lead. However, it wasn't enough as Coastal Carolina won set three, 25-22.
"We can't dwell on this one," Olson said. "We're already looking forward to Appalachian State."
The Warhawks will remain at home for a noon matchup on Sunday against Appalachian State.
