MONROE, La. – The founding father of ULM's exclusive 10,000-yard club stuck around to meet its newest member on Saturday.

ULM quarterback Caleb Evans (10,143; 2016-19) joined Kolton Browning (11,808 2010-13) and Steven Jyles (10,234) when he surpassed 10,000 career yards in total offense. Evans passed for 215 yards and two scores and rushed for a career-high 148 yards and three touchdowns in ULM's 48-41 loss to Arkansas State.

Jyles, a ULM L Club Hall of Fame member, was in town for Homecoming and met Evans for the first time afterward as they were introduced postgame.

"It was an honor meeting him," Evans said. "Before the season, we talked about all the records I could break. To meet him and talk to him about football and what he's seen in me and how he said I was pretty good, it means a lot. It was an honor to meet him out there and be in his class."

Evans now owns the record for ULM rushing touchdowns at 32 as he moved past former running back Calvin Dawson (30; 2004-07). Evans is ULM's all-time rushing leader among quarterbacks with 1,985 yards.

"Ten thousand is a lot of yards," ULM coach Matt Viator said. "We've been fortunate that he's had really good health. I'm happy for him in that sense."

Evans ranks third in ULM career passing yards with 8,258, behind Browning (10, 263) and Jyles (8,987), and is fifth with 49 career touchdown passes.

With ULM slipping to 3-5, 2-2 in the Sun Belt this season, Evans said his focus remains on helping the team reach bowl eligibility. The Warhawks have four games remaining on the regular-season schedule, including a home date with Georgia State on Nov. 9.

"It's great to do some of the things I've done," he said. "But we talked to some of the seniors after the game and they were saying there's still a couple of games left for us to achieve what we want."

Corner the market: ULM cornerback Corey Straughter recorded his team-leading fifth interception when he picked off Arkansas State quarterback Layne Hatcher in the third quarter.

Straughter's takeaway and 22-yard return to the ASU 42 gave ULM a chance to score five plays later to tie the game at 34-34. Straughter also was part of a defensive effort that limited Arkansas State's star receiver Omar Bayless to less than 100 yards in the game.

"He played really good," Viator said. "He's made plays."

When Straughter left the game with an apparent cramping issue, Arkansas State was able to take advantage. Hatcher went right at Straughter's replacement Rhoy Williams and completed a 36-yard pass to the ULM 4. An acrobatic sideline catch by Dahu Green set up the go-ahead touchdown run by Marcel Murray.

"Unfortunately, he came out of the game one or two plays before the guy caught the ball," Viator said. "I guess he was cramping. I didn't get an official word on that but he came out of the game. "

Topping 200: Linebacker Chase Day recorded four tackles to move past the 200-tackle milestone. The fifth-year senior has 201 career stops. Only teammate Cortez Sisco Jr., who led ULM with 10 tackles against Arkansas State, has more (228) among active Warhawks.
