ULM Hosts Senior Day, Falls to UT Arlington

MONROE, La. – The ULM volleyball team honored seniors Albany Schaffer, Katie McKay and Mikaela Worley on Sunday during senior day, but fell to UT Arlington, 3-0, in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

"Today was a special day for our seniors, not for what we did on the court or even the outcome of the match, but for what our team did for our seniors in the locker room and what the coaches and administrators were able to provide them on center court before the match," head coach Charlie Olson said.

The beginning of the match started out with a very long rally between the two teams and the Mavericks (15-10, 7-6 Sun Belt) were able to come away with the point. Lauren Appelman gained the Warhawks' (11-17, 1-11 Sun Belt) first point of the set with a kill and Ina Gosen earned a service ace to give ULM a 5-3 lead.

UT Arlington regained a small lead, but Darby Fisher gained a quickly-timed kill to give the Warhawks an 8-7 lead. The Mavericks regained momentum with an 8-2 scoring run to take a 15-12 lead. Kate Blasingame nailed a kill, but UT Arlington scored four unanswered points to take a 19-13 lead.

ULM made a comeback as a kill by Appelman brought the Warhawks within four, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks took set one, 25-21.

UT Arlington quickly started set two with a 5-0 lead and extended that lead to 10-3. ULM went on a 6-2 scoring run and made the score 12-9 on the backs of Blasingame, Gosen and Kathryn Raschilla. The Mavericks maintained a steady lead throughout the set and won set two, 25-16.

ULM and UT Arlington traded points to start set three. With the Mavericks in the lead 6-5, UT Arlington went on a 13-2 scoring run to take a 19-7 lead. Blasingame nailed a kill to stop the Maverick momentum for a brief moment. Mikaela Worley and Alix Christie both gained kills near the end of the set, but UT Arlington rolled on to a 25-13 set three win.

"We thank our seniors for their leadership and for their dedication over the past four years," Olson said.

ULM will host their final home match of the season at 6 p.m. on Friday against the Ragin' Cajuns.
