MONROE, La. - The ULM women's basketball team will open the 2019-20 slate with an exhibition game at 11 a.m. Monday vs. Millsaps at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. It is one of two exhibitions on the season for the Warhawks, with the other coming Dec. 17 vs. Louisiana College. Admission is free for Monday's exhibition.
"We are thrilled to play in front of a great crowd with incredible new uniforms on and begin a brand new journey," said first-year head coach
Brooks Donald Williams. "We have a great opportunity to play someone other than ourselves and really get a good gauge of where we are. We are in a little bit of a different scenario than most because we are truly trying to find ourselves as a team and any opportunity we have to do so we will benefit from."
The Warhawks closed the 2018-19 season with a 10-19 record, but return eight players while adding four newcomers to the 2019-20 roster. Seniors
Lauren Fitch and
Amber Thompson, along with junior
Whitney Goins, are the top returning scorers for ULM. Fitch averaged 9.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game as a junior, while tying for second on the team with 57 assists. Thompson averaged 7.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, while picking up 32 assists and 32 steals. Goins averaged 6.1 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in her sophomore season, while handing out a team-high 60 assists and blocked 22 shots. Senior
Destini Lunsford also returns after leading ULM in 3-point shooting last year. Sophomore
Jamie Means is back after leading the Warhawks with 26 rejections last season.
Monday's game is also the 2019-20 season Education Day, with students from several local schools set to attend the game.
"We are opening the season with our community schools and it will be really special," Williams said. "We have over 700 students that will be filling up Fant. It is incredible exposure for not only our university but for Millsaps as well and such a great opportunity for students in the area, even at a young age, to attend an event on a college campus. We are so thankful for the response we've gotten in support of our Education Day and look forward to making it an annual event."
