LUBBOCK, Texas – A 12-1 run to close the first quarter gave Texas Tech all the separation it would need in an 83-38 win over the ULM women's basketball team Sunday afternoon at United Supermarkets Arena.
"We're obviously disappointed," ULM head coach Brooks Donald Williams said. "We didn't want to end our pre-Christmas non-conference play this way. We didn't feel like we competed like we wanted to today. Texas Tech is really tough. We knew that. But we felt like we could have competed a little bit better. That's something we have to look at and grow from."
A 3-pointer from junior Whitney Goins tied the game at 5 with 5:06 left in the first quarter, but Texas Tech started to hit its stride down the rest of the quarter, going on a 12-1 run to close the quarter leading 17-6.
After a 3-point play by senior Lauren Fitch opened the second quarter, Tech scored the next 13 points to push the lead over 20 at 30-9. Tech had another 7-0 run in the quarter and led by as much as 29 points in the half before leading 42-17 at halftime.
Texas Tech continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring ULM 15-8 in the third quarter and 26-13 in the fourth quarter for the 83-38 final.
Senior Amber Thompson and freshman Gara Beth Self led the Warhawks with eight points each. Senior post Brittany Brewer tallied her first career triple-double for Texas Tech, scoring 12 points, pulling in 14 rebounds and blocking 16 shots. Freshman Alexis Tucker led four Raiders in double figures with 18 points.
ULM shot a season-low 19.4% (13-of-67) from the field, 40.0% (4-of-10) from 3-point range and 50.0% (8-of-16) from the free throw line. The Warhawks had 44 rebounds, five assists, six steals, one block and 20 turnovers.
Texas Tech shot 40.7% (24-of-59) from the floor, 18.8% (3-of-16) from 3-point range and 84.2% (32-of-38) from the free throw line. The Lady Raiders had 50 rebounds, 13 assists, 20 blocks, 12 steals and 12 turnovers.
