ULM Resumes Three-Game Homestand Against Millsaps

ULM Basketball Notes: Game 6 vs. Millsaps College
 
STORYLINE –
After a seven-day layoff, ULM (3-2) resumes its three-game homestand against NCAA Division III Millsaps College (6-3) on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. The Warhawks have won 13 consecutive regular-season non-conference games in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. In addition, ULM is 17-3 (.850) in its last 20 home games.
 
ULM's starting lineup features two double-figure scorers, in guards JD Williams and Michael Ertel who have combined to average 35.2 points per game (17.6 ppg. each). Williams and Ertel have combined to account for 56 percent of the team's scoring through the first five games.
 
THE STARTING FIVE –
• ULM is 29-7 (.806) in games played in Fant-Ewing Coliseum since 2017-18, including a 17-3 record (.850) in its last 20 home games. The Warhawks went 14-3 at home in 2018-19. The 14 home victories matched the second-highest single-season total in school history (six times; previous seasons: 1985-86, 1990-91, 1992-93, 2006-07, 2014-15 and 2018-19). The Warhawks won a single-season record 15 games (15-1) in 1978-79.
 
• The Warhawks have won 13 consecutive regular-season non-conference games in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. ULM last lost a regular-season non-conference home game against Northwestern State, 76-61, on Nov. 21, 2017.
 
• ULM ranks among the Sun Belt Conference leaders in field-goal percentage defense (second at .377), blocked shots (second at 4.8 per game), 3-point field-goal percentage defense (second at .298), scoring defense (third at 61.4 points per game), rebound margin (fourth at +3.4 pg.) and offensive rebounds (fifth at 11.4 pg.). In addition, the Warhawks are listed among the NCAA Division I leaders in field-goal percentage defense (No. 39), blocked shots per game (No. 50) and scoring defense (No. 53).
 
• With his game-high 22 points against Northwestern State, junior guard Michael Ertel became the 38th player in ULM history to join the 1,000-point club. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Ertel reached the milestone with his layup with 15:33 left in the game.
 
• ULM's starting backcourt of Michael Ertel and JD Williams has combined to average 35.2 points per game. The tandem has combined to account for 56 percent of the team's scoring through the first five games. Ertel and Williams are tied for fifth in the Sun Belt Conference in scoring, averaging 17.6 points per game.
 
Williams ranks among the Sun Belt's Top 10 in three additional statistical categories: second in minutes played (37.8 per game), tied for ninth in free-throw percentage (.808) and 10th in 3-point field goals made (1.8 pg.). His 37.8 minutes per game rank eighth among NCAA Division I players.
 
Ertel is listed among the league's Top 10 in three additional statistical categories: third in minutes played (36.6 per game), sixth in 3-point field goals made (2.4 pg.) and ninth in 3-point field-goal percentage (.343). The Indianapolis, Indiana, native has scored in double figures in 12 consecutive games, (dating back to last season) including four 20-point outings.
 
MILLSAPS SCOUTING REPORT –
Millsaps College (6-3) completed a season sweep over non-conference rival Belhaven with an 81-69  homecourt victory Tuesday night. It marked the Majors' third-straight win.
 
Millsaps' starting lineup features two double figure scorers, in 6-foot-2 freshman forward Anthony Hughes Jr. (13.7 points per game) and 5-9 freshman guard Kaleb Jenkins (12.9 ppg., 3.2 assists per game).
 
Hughes recorded his first career double-double last night against Belhaven, setting season highs with 22 points and 11 rebounds. He has scored in double figures in five-straight games and currently ranks 10th in the Southern Athletic Association in scoring average.
 
Kalvin Spikes, a 6-9 junior center, leads the team in rebounding (5.8 per game) and ranks fourth in scoring (7.4 ppg.). His .675 field-goal percentage ranks second in the SAA.
 
Junior guard Saxton Becker, who averages 8.8 points per game off the bench, is tied for third in the SAA in 3-point field-goal percentage (.500).
 
Third-year Millsaps head coach Jimmy Smith welcomes back four starters from last year's that finished 12-14 overall, including a 4-10 record (seventh place) in the SAA.
 
ULM/MILLSAPS SERIES NOTES –
Wednesday's game marks the seventh meeting between ULM and Millsaps College. The Warhawks lead the all-time series 5-1, including a 4-0 record in games played in Monroe.
 
THE LAST MEETING –
ULM 94, Millsaps College 52 (Nov. 10, 2018, in Monroe, La.): Travis Munnings scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to lead ULM to a 94-52 victory over NCAA Division III Millsaps College in its 2018-19 home opener in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Munnings, who hit 7-of-11 shots from the field including 3-of-6 3-pointers, also collected nine rebounds.
 
There were four ties and eight lead changes in the first half. A 3-pointer by Michael Sullivan gave Millsaps its biggest lead at 27-23 with 4:48 left in the opening half. ULM outscored the Majors, 16-5, over the next 4:19 and took a 39-32 lead at the intermission. Millsaps outrebounded the Warhawks, 22-14, in the 20 minutes and enjoyed a 15-7 edge in second-chance points.
 
Munnings hit a jumper in the lane and knocked down a 3-pointer to spark a 14-2 run to open the second half as ULM raced out to a 53-34 lead. Andre Washington's dunk fueled an 18-4 spurt as the Warhawks extended their lead to 34 points at 79-45 on a jumper by Brandon Newman with 6:12 remaining in the game. ULM (2-0) outscored Millsaps, 55-20, in the second half while shooting 55 percent from the floor (18-of-33), including 6-of-13 3-pointers. The Warhawks also outmuscled the Majors on the backboards in the second half, 29-17.
 
Munnings led the second-half surge, hitting 5-of-7 shots from the floor including 3-of-4 3-pointers.
 
Three other ULM starters joined Munnings in double figures, as Michael Ertel contributed 16 points and Daishon Smith and Washington each added 10 points.
 
Twelve different players saw action and 10 scored for the Warhawks.
 
Newlon Gillihan, who connected on 3-of-4 3-pointers, led Millsaps in scoring with nine points, followed by Sullivan, who tossed in eight points.
 
THE LAST TIME OUT –
ULM 77, Northwestern State 69 (Nov. 26, 2019, in Monroe, La.): Michael Ertel crossed the threshold on 1,000 career points in ULM's 77-69 win over Northwestern State.
 
The junior guard entered the contest 18 points short of the milestone and had 13 by halftime at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
 
Ertel's layup with 15:33 left in the game gave him 1,000 points even. Ertel finished with 22 points and made four 3-pointers as ULM improved to 3-2. He became the 38th member of ULM's 1,000-point club.
 
Playing their first game in 12 days, the Warhawks found their stroke early with a season-high nine 3-pointers. However, eight of those came in the first half. 
 
ULM successfully deployed a three-guard attack for much of the game that aided ball security (16 assists to seven turnovers) and free throw shooting (18-of-22).
 
Jalen Hodge provided the scoring punch off the bench, as he hit three 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 12 points.
 
After a scoreless first half, JD Williams finished with 17 points and five assists. Williams hit 9-of-11 free throws. 
 
ULM finished the first half on a 7-2 run and led 38-29 at halftime. ULM had 10 assists on 14 field goals in the half.
 
ULM led by as many as 18 in the second half but Northwestern cut the advantage to single digits at 68-59 with 2:06 remaining in the game. The Warhawks endured a scoring drought as the Demons used a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 68-62 with 35 seconds left.
 
Williams made a pair of free throws before Brian White's 3-pointer cut the ULM advantage to 70-65 with 28 seconds showing. The Demons could get no closer than five points though, despite ULM not hitting a field goal over the final 4:27.
 
ULM RECORDS 1,000TH WIN IN PROGRAM HISTORY –
With its 73-72 overtime win over Alcorn State Saturday, ULM recorded its 1,000th victory in program history since beginning competition as a four-year institution in 1951-52 (69th season). Keith Richard's 115 career victories at ULM rank third on the all-time list, trailing only Mike Vining (402; 1981-05) and Lenny Fant (326; 1957-79). That trio has accounted for 842 of ULM's 1,000 all-time wins as a four-year institution.
 
WARHAWKS DOMINATE THE GLASS IN SEASON OPENER –
ULM outrebounded NCAA Division III Louisiana College, 57-24, in the season opener. The +33 rebound margin is tied for the seventh-best mark recorded during the 2019-20 season. UMKC outrebounded Bacone College by +41, 56-15, on Nov. 18.
 
ULM LOOKS TO EXTEND POSTSEASON TOURNAMENT STREAK –
ULM made its 13th postseason appearance in program history in 2019. It marked the Warhawks' fourth trip to postseason play in the last five years, including their third appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. ULM knocked off Kent State, 87-77, the first round of the 2019 CIT before falling to Texas State in triple overtime, 108-102, in the quarterfinals.
