Warhawks Head to Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Championships

MONROE, La. – The ULM track and field team is making its final preparations for the 2019 Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Championships, scheduled for Feb. 18-19 in Birmingham, Alabama, at the Metro CrossPlex.
 
While a number of Warhawks will be competing for the title in their specialties, four women in particular head into the indoor championships in prime position to compete for top honors. Among them include Kourtni Russell (60-meter hurdles), Micaiah Dendy (long jump / triple jump), Jasmine Scott-Kilgo (long jump) and Brianna Sam (weight throw).
 
Russell, currently ranked fifth in the hurdles, has taken part in three indoor meets. She opened the 2019 season with a 15th-place showing at the Texas Tech Classic, crossing the line in 8.78. That was followed by a fifth-place outing at the Bayou Bengal Invitational, resulting in a time of 8.90. Russell also competed in the Samford Bulldog Open, again grabbing fifth, as she crossed the line in 8.85.
 
Dendy is looking to successfully defend her championship in the triple jump, ranking second among Sun Belt Conference performers. She has a pair of Top-Three finishes this winter, including her best outing (second), at the Samford Bulldog Open, where she leapt 39-feet, 5-inches. Her best individual performance in 2019 came in her first meet, the Texas Tech Classic, where she managed to stretch 39-9 1/2 and placed 13th. In the Bayou Bengal Invitational, Dendy emerged third with a mark of 39-1 1/4.
 
Dendy took part in the long jump in two of those three aforementioned meets, winning the Samford Bulldog Open with a mark of 18-feet, 5-inches. She made significant strides in the long jump, after placing 21st in the Texas Tech Classic following a mark of 17-5 3/4.
 
Scott-Kilgo has put together an impressive winter in her freshman season in the long jump event. The Canadian began her collegiate career by placing 10th in the Ted Nelson Invitational with a leap of 17-9 3/4. She reached the podium the following week at the Bayou Bengal Invitational, placing third with a mark of 18-5. In her most recent event, the Samford Bulldog Open, Scott-Kilgo was fifth after stretching herself 17-9.
 
Sam heads into the championships ranked second in the Sun Belt in the weight throw. She has finished inside the Top Five in three meets this season. Her best outing coming at the Bayou Bengal Invitational, which she won with a toss of 60-2 1/2. Sam closed out the indoor slate with a second-place performance at the Samford Bulldog Open, with a heave of 58-3 1/4. Her season began at the Ted Nelson Invitational, where she placed fourth with a toss of 56-6 3/4.
 
The ULM men's unit has nine contenders for the top individual prize, including Sam Healy (long jump), Lebrun Nelson (triple jump), Colm Bourke (long jump), Micah Dye (shot put), Levaughn Battick (60-meter hurdles), Cole Burgess (pole vault), Grant Girtman (pole vault), Erik Hawkins (800-meter run) and Eran Siboni (400-meter dash).
 
Healy, who enters the championships ranked third in the conference, has three Top-10 finishes in the long jump to his credit. Among them include a first-place performance in the Samford Bulldog Open, where he stretched himself for 23-5 1/2. Healy began the season at the Texas Tech Classic, where he placed seventh with a mark of 23-10 1/2.
 
Nelson, the sixth-ranked individual in the triple jump, has silver medal experience in the competition. He has participated in two meets this winter, including the Bayou Bengal Invitational where he recorded a mark of 48-2 3/4, good for fifth in the event. One week later, on Feb. 9, in the Samford Bulldog Open, Nelson brought home first-place honors with a leap of 48-6.
 
Bourke, also a long jump specialist who is sixth in the Sun Belt rankings, participated in all four winter meets. He opened with a fifth-place finish at the Ted Nelson Invitational (23-6 3/4) and was 15th at the Texas Tech Classic (22-4 1/2) to close out January. Bourke managed a fourth-place finish at the Bayou Bengal Invitational, after leaping for 23-5 1/2, before placing second at the Samford Bulldog Open (23-2 1/2) in the indoor regular-season finale.
 
Dye has made progressive improvements in three of his four meets in the shot put. Opening the season with a fourth-place heave of 50-9 1/4 in the Ted Nelson Invitational, Dye improved on that with a mark of 51-5 3/4 at the Texas Tech Classic, placing sixth in the process. He rebounded from a 49-7 toss at the Bayou Bengal Invitational, which resulted in sixth-place finish, by posting a 51-9 3/4 throw in the Samford Bulldog Open.
 
Battick, who enters the championships ranked seventh in the Sun Belt in the 60-meter hurdles, is responsible for three Top-10 finishes. The first, a seventh-place performance, came at the Ted Nelson Invitational where he crossed the line in 8.29. Two weeks later, in the Texas Tech Classic, he recorded a time of 8.16 to close out the race in sixth.  
 
Burgess also has made progress in each of his performances, opening the season by extending himself for 13-8 1/2 to finish 14th at the Ted Nelson Invitational. Taking part in the Texas Tech Classic on Jan. 26, Burgess recorded a mark of 14-8 1/2 and finished eighth. His best finish of the winter came at the Samford Bulldog Open when he took second with a leap of 14-11.
 
Girtman has participated in one pole vault competition during the indoor season, finishing sixth at the Samford Bulldog Open with a mark of 13-11 1/4.
 
Hawkins has made an impact in two 800-meter races for the Warhawks this season, capping off the Texas Tech Classic with a 14th-place performance in 1:54.00. Two weeks later, when taking part in the Samford Bulldog Open, the seventh-ranked Hawkins recorded a 1:55.06 as he finished second.
                                                                                                                                                                      
Siboni, the Sun Belt's seventh-ranked performer in the 400-meter dash, began the season with an eighth-place showing at the Ted Nelson Invitational, finishing in a time of 48.94. He returned to the track on at the Samford Bulldog Open, crossing the line fifth at 48.58.
 
Two ULM relay teams, the men's 4x400 meter relay and the women's 4x400 meter relay unit, also have performed well in the indoor season. The men's team enters the championship ranked third, while the women's is seventh.
