No. 24 Minnesota Notches 13-1 Win Over Warhawks

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 24th-ranked Minnesota softball team used a nine-run first inning to its advantage as it completed a 13-1 five-inning win over ULM at the Easton Bama Bash on Sunday, Feb. 24.

ULM closed the game with seven hits, led by Jaclyn Kresta, who finished off the game 2-for-3 from the plate. Teammates Bailey Thibodeaux (1-3) and Sydney McKay (1-3) closed out the game with one RBI and a run, respectively.

Minnesota jumped on the offensive early as MaKenna Partain led off with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Hope Brandner reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with no outs. Natalie DenHartog tacked the first runs on the board for the Golden Gophers with a grand slam home run to center field.

Katelyn Kemmetmueller became the fifth Minnesota player to reach base in the first inning with a double to right center, coming home when Emma Burns lifted a two-run home run to left-center field to make for a 6-0 Golden Gophers lead. With one out and Partain at the plate again, the junior second baseman sent a double up the middle to plate Allie Arneson for the seventh run. After assuming an 8-0 lead off a sacrifice fly by Maddie Houlihan, Brandner singled up the middle to score Partain for the final run of the first.

McKay began the ULM half of the first with a single to third base, moving to second on a walk by Murphy Williams two batters later. Thibodeaux slapped a single to right field, scoring McKay from second for the lone ULM run of the game.

The Golden Gophers generated three more runs in the top of the second, opening the frame with a walk by Burns. Josey White followed with a single through the left side of the infield, and two batters later, Ali Lindner drew a walk to load the bases. Partain, despite the out, advanced Burns home for the 10-1 Minnesota lead. Houlihan tripled into right field, scoring Linder and Josey White to push the advantage to 12-1.

Both teams would remain scoreless until the fourth inning when Minnesota upped its lead to 13-1. Lindner walked and stole second in succession to begin the frame before scoring from second on a single through the right side of the infield for the final run.

Sydney Smith (2-1) earned the win for Minnesota after scattering six hits, one run and one walk in three innings of work. Adrianna Chavarria (1-4) took to the mound for ULM and allowed five runs, three hits and one walk, but the defense did not record an out.

The Minnesota offense was led by the trio of Partain (3-4, 3 RBI, 2 runs, double), Houlihan (2-2, 3 RBI, run, 3B) and DenHartog (2-4, 4 RBI, run, GS).
