ULM Beach Volleyball Opens Arizona Road Trip with Split Thursday

PHOENIX – The ULM beach volleyball team opened its six-match road trip to Arizona by earning a spilt on Thursday (March 14), falling to 17th-ranked Grand Canyon, 5-0, before sweeping NAIA opponent Arizona Christian, 5-0. Both matches were held at the GCU Beach Volleyball Stadium.
 
Match 1 Recap: Grand Canyon 5, ULM 0
The No. 17 Grand Canyon beach volleyball team earned a 5-0 victory over ULM Thursday afternoon.
 
The Lopes, who improved to 10-2 on the season, grabbed the first match of the day on court four as Taylor Jarzombek and Esmee Priem posted a 21-13, 21-9 victory over Elizabeth Moreland and Allie Kemp. The tandem of Katie Sarber and Anaya Evans followed with a 21-16, 21-18 win over Audrey Brooks and Holland Pontheiux on court five.
 
The match-clinching win for Grand Canyon came on court two as Bella Bauman and Jessica Stansfield emerged with a 21-12, 21-18 victory against Catherine Griffith and Maile Sellers.
 
The tandem of Hannah Towne and Katie Hess posted a 21-18, 21-12 win over Gabby Love and Grace Convey on court one while GCU completed the sweep as Mikaela Raudsepp and Teagan DeFalco earned a 21-18, 21-12 victory against the duo of Tamara Merseli and Kayla Gallant on court three.
 
"Grand Canyon was tough," ULM head coach Sara Rishell said. "We started out pretty solid in our ones, threes and fives, but around the technical timeout, Grand Valley really started to pull away.
 
"Our fives played extremely well and kept Grand Valley out of playing its system a good big. At the end of the second set, we missed two serves that ended up costing us the game. Against really good teams, errors like that are detrimental."

Match 2 Recap: ULM 5, Arizona Christian 0
ULM (8-4) rebounded to sweep NAIA opponent Arizona Christian, 5-0, winning all five matches in straight sets.
 
The Warhawks earned the first win on court four as Elizabeth Moreland and Bailey Smith produced a 21-14, 21-12 victory over Kaitlyn Vigil and Hannah Brown. In a battle of No. 5 pairings, Holland Pontheiux and Audrey Brooks emerged with a 21-16, 21-6 win over Katie Patterson and Tristan Barta.
 
Tamara Merseli and Kayla Gallant clinched the dual victory for ULM on court three with a 21-14, 21-10 triumph over Issabella Martell and Oriana Montoya.
 
ULM's No. 2 pairing of Catherine Griffith and Maile Sellers rolled to a 21-7, 21-15 win against Brittany Western and Maddie Lapierre. The Warhawks completed their fourth sweep of the season as the No. 1 pairing of Gabby Love and Grace Convey posted a 21-10, 21-14 victory over Aubri Green and Marina Samaniego.
 
"We just handled business against Arizona Christian," ULM head coach Sara Rishell said. "We were strong at the net in very pair, and we had great ball control. Our team was able to open up our offense and just really control the game.
 
"Tomorrow is a new day, and we're ready for the challenges ahead."
 
ULM opens the Arizona Invitational in Tucson Friday, March 15 with matches against New Mexico (10 a.m. MT) and No. 15 Arizona (12:30 p.m. MT).
