San Marcos, Texas -
The ULM baseball team continues its five-game road trip with a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Texas State. First pitch times are set for 6 p.m. Friday, 2:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Setting The Scene

The Warhawks are coming off a mid-week loss at Southern Miss on Tuesday, falling 5-4 to the Golden Eagles to drop to 7-13 on the season. Texas State lost at Incarnate Word 6-1 Tuesday to drop to 12-9 on the year.

Friday's game marks the 78th all-time meeting between the Warhawks and Bobcats. The two teams met as members of the Southland Conference from 1988 to 2006, when ULM departed the SLC for the Sun Belt, and then resumed the series in 2014 when Texas State joined the Sun Belt.

The Warhawks won two out of three meetings with the Bobcats last season in Monroe, dropping the first game of the series on Saturday 8-2 before bouncing back with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday, winning 3-2 and 1-0. Texas State won two out of three games in the series in San Marcos in 2017.

ULM head coach Michael Federico is in his second season with the Warhawks. He led the team to an 11-win improvement in his first season, as the Warhawks posted a 23-31 record in 2018. He is 30-44 overall as the head coach at ULM.

Texas State head coach Ty Harrington is in his 20th season leading the Bobcats. Harrington has led Texas State to three NCAA Regional appearances (2000, 2009, 2011) and has won at least 29 games and posted a winning record in conference play in 17 of his 19 seasons. He is 633-505-2 all-time at Texas State.

Texas State dropped two of its three games at South Alabama to open Sun Belt play last weekend, falling to the Jaguars 10-7 on Friday and 1-0 on Saturday before salvaging the series 8-2 on Sunday.

Leading Off

Through Wednesday's games, ULM ranks 11th in the Sun Belt Conference as a team in batting average at .247. ULM has 159 hits, 25 doubles, three triples and 10 home runs with 104 runs scored. The Warhawks have also compiled 159 strikeouts to 94 walks. On the mound, ULM ranks last in the SBC in team ERA at 7.05. The Warhawks have given up 159 runs, 134 earned, on 196 hits with 177 strikeouts and 112 walks.

ULM lost its mid-week contest to Southern Miss 5-4 on Tuesday. ULM trailed 3-1 going to the eighth inning when they struck for three runs. Tingelstad tied the game with a 2-RBI double down the right field line, while Bell gave the Warhawks the lead with a single to left. However, the Golden Eagles took the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win.

The Warhawks lost their first three Sun Belt Conference games of the season over the weekend to No. 16 Coastal Carolina. On Friday, the Chants took the series opener 13-3. With the game tied at 1, the Chanticleers scored five runs in the fourth inning, including a three-run home run by Cory Wood, to take a 6-1 lead. Chad Bell led ULM with two hits, including a double, and a run scored.

On Saturday, Coastal Carolina rallied and pulled away over the final five innings for the 14-2 win over ULM. The Warhawks claimed a 2-0 lead with Trent Tingelstad's RBI single in the first inning and Braedon Barrett's sacrifice fly in the third inning, both scoring Ryan Humeniuk. However, Coastal used three hits and three walks to score four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead, and pulled away with a six-run sixth inning, including a grand slam by Mike Koenig.

On Sunday, Coastal Carolina capped the series sweep of ULM with a 15-7 win. ULM trailed 7-6 in the seventh inning when Coastal took advantage of four doubles, two walks and a ULM error to plate six runs in the inning and pull away for the win. Tingelstad had four hits in the loss. Conner Deeds threw 4.1 innings in relief, giving up two runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
