ULM Softball Topped by Texas State Saturday, 8-2

MONROE, La. – Texas State capitalized on a five-run seventh inning to earn an 8-2 victory over ULM in Sun Belt Conference softball action on Saturday (March 23) afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex.
 
Leading 3-2 heading into the seventh, the Bobcats (14-15, 4-4) got their first hit of the frame in the form of a one-out triple from Bailee Carter. Carter scored on a wild pitch with Tara Oltmann at the plate, extending the Texas State advantage to 4-2.
 
Oltmann, who reached on a single, moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before Hailey MacKay reached base on a walk. Haleigh Davis followed with a double to left field, plating Oltmann while moving pinch runner Molly Damiani to third. Damiani scored the sixth Texas State run on a passed ball, which moved Damiani to third, before teammate ArieAnn Bell sent a two-run home run over the center-field wall for the 8-2 Texas State lead.
 
The Bobcats got their first two runs of the game in the first inning, but ULM answered with three-hit, two-run first inning to knot the game at 2-2. The Warhawk inning began with a single by Sydney McKay, who was caught stealing with Jessie Watts at the plate. Jayden Mount kept the Warhawks first inning alive with a single through the left side of the infield, coming home when Bailey Thibodeaux cracked a two-run home run over the left field wall for the third Warhawk hit of the day.
 
Texas State took the lead for good at 3-2 in the third inning on a sacrifice fly to right field by Oltmann.
 
Dalilah Barrera (6-3), who pitched 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts, picked up the win for the Bobcats. Krista Jacobs was credited with her first save after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings with one walk and one strikeout.  
 
ULM (4-25, 1-7 Sun Belt), which tallied four hits on the day, was led by Thibodeaux, who was 1-for-3 from the plate with a run and two RBI.
 
Watts (0-5) suffered the loss after tossing 6.1 innings on the mound, surrendering five runs on 10 hits with one walk and one strikeout.
 
The three-game series concludes on Sunday, March 24 at noon at the ULM Softball Complex.
