ULM Beach Volleyball Drops Pair of 3-2 Matches Friday

Beach Volleyball
HOUSTON – The ULM beach volleyball team suffered a pair of 3-2 setbacks to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and New Orleans on Friday in the opening day of the Houston Baptist Invitational.

Match 1 Recap: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3, ULM 2
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi earned its third win of the season over the Warhawks in the opening match of the Houston Baptist Invitational on Friday morning. The Islanders emerged with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory, rallying from an 0-2 deficit to claim the win.

The Warhawks opened with a 21-18, 21-14 win by the No. 4 tandem of Elizabeth Moreland and Allie Kemp, who downed Brooke Adkisson and Kylie Kvam. That lead quickly became 2-0 as Audrey Brooks and Holland Ponthieux combined for a 21-16, 21-10 decision over Julia Carter and Olivia Rook on court five.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi captured its first victory (21-15, 21-17) as the No. 2 pair of Emma Coudon and Selina Marolf posted a win over Gabby Love and Grace Convey. The Islanders knotted the score at 2-2 as the No. 3 tandem of Abby DeVido and Lael Ceriani triumphed in three sets over Tamara Merseli and Kayla Gallant, 21-15, 16-21, 15-13.

With the match hinging on the outcome of the No. 1 court, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's duo of Rachel Young and Madison Green fought past Maile Sellers and Catherine Griffith in three sets by scores of 21-17, 19-21, 15-11.

"Our four, five and six (pairs) did a phenomenal job taking care of their side of the court," ULM head coach Sara Rishell said. "Texas A&M-Corpus Christi didn't have an answer and couldn't adjust to our team. Allie (Kemp) and Elizabeth (Moreland) got off to a slow start in set one, but with tougher serving by Allie and a stronger block by Elizabeth, we were able to control the rest of set one and all of set two.

"Maile (Sellers) and Catherine (Griffith) at the ones had a tremendous fight in set two. They were down by at least 10 very late in the game and came back to take the set. In set three, the pair missed about five serves, and in a short set to 15, it's difficult to come back from that."

Match 2 Recap: New Orleans 3, ULM 2
The Warhawks (12-10) wrapped up the afternoon session with a one-point setback to New Orleans. The Privateers (9-4) opened the match with a 14-21, 21-6, 15-11 win by the No. 4 duo of Rhyan Rand and Madison Miller, who fought past Elizabeth Moreland and Allie Kemp.

ULM quickly evened the match as the No. 5 pair of Audrey Brooks and Holland Ponthieux emerged with a 21-18, 21-13 victory against Alexa Spartz and Maxine Walsh.

New Orleans would regain the lead when Veronica Corcoran and Rachel Kuhn came away with a 21-14, 21-19 win against Maile Sellers and Catherine Griffith in the battle of No. 1s. The Privateers managed to clinch the victory when the No. 2 pair of Blessing Dunn and Brianna Vega produced a 21-18, 21-18 victory over Tamara Merseli and Grace Convey.

ULM closed the day on a positive note as the No. 3 team of Gabby Love and Kayla Gallant earned a three-set win over Victoria Corcoran and Ally Carr by scores of 21-10, 17-21, 15-12.

"Audrey (Brooks) and Holland (Ponthieux) dominated the third set against UNO at the five-spot," ULM head coach Sara Rishell said. "Audrey was very versatile on offense and Holland was patient on defense, which is exactly what we need out of the two of them.

"Allie (Kemp) and Elizabeth (Moreland) had a great start to UNO, but took them for granted in set two and had to battle for a third set. Small mistakes in a third set will break the team, and that's what happened. Our serve and our serve receive was non-existent.

"Gabby (Love) and Kayla (Gallant) were amazing in set one and set three," Rishell continued. "I'm so proud of the fight out of Gabby and Kayla. We spent a lot of time talking about how I wanted them to play, and they did everything that was expected of them. Those two fought extremely hard after every ball and deserved the win they received in set three.

"It's unlike our team to go 0-2 on a day, but with the right focus, we can find out just how resilient we can be and come out strong tomorrow."

Saturday, ULM has matches scheduled against Abilene Christian (12 p.m.) and host HBU (3 p.m.).
