ULM Softball Rallies from Seven-Run Deficit; Defeats USA, 16-11

MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team capitalized on a trio of multi-run innings, three errors and seven hits, two each from Brie Wrobel and Page Kennedy, to come through with a 16-11 victory over Sun Belt Conference foe South Alabama on Friday, April 19 at the ULM Softball Complex.

The big inning for the Warhawks came in the sixth when they put eight runs on the board with two outs, capitalizing on three batters being hit by a pitch and five reaching base via a walk.

The 16-run outburst by ULM marks the most for the team since it tallied 18 versus Mississippi Valley State on April 17, 2018. ULM reached the mark behind the individual performances of Wrobel (2-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Kennedy (2-5, RBI, run). Teammates Sydney McKay, Jessie Watts and Bailey Thibodeaux contributed two RBI each.

The Warhawk offense faced an uphill battle after a seven-run second inning by South Alabama that came via seven hits. The Jaguars took advantage of five extra-base hits, including two home runs (Katelyn Gruich, Victoria Ortiz), two doubles (Lyric Cabral, Brittani Reid) and one triple (MC Nichols) over the course of the frame.

ULM put its first runs of the game on the board in the bottom of the third. Megan Shaw led off the inning with a walk and moved to second when Jaclyn Kresta reached on an error. Two batters later, with the bases loaded following a Korie Kreps walk, Jayden Mount scored Shaw from third on a fielder's choice. Wrobel followed with a single through the right side of the infield, moving Kreps home from third, for the second ULM run.

Watts continued the third with a double to left-center field, plating Mount from third, as the Warhawks trimmed the South Alabama lead to 7-3. Page picked up her first RBI of the day with a run-scoring single through the left side of the infield as Wrobel scored the fourth run of the frame. Shaw again proved to be a nuisance for the Jaguars, reaching on an error at shortstop that scored Watts as ULM narrowed the gap to 7-5.

The Jaguars got one of those runs back in the top of the fourth as Kennedy Cronan doubled down the left field line to score Ortiz for the eighth run of the contest. Kamdyn Kvistad followed that with a two-out single through the left side of the infield, scoring Cronan to provide USA with the 9-5 lead.

The ULM (8-35, 4-14 Sun Belt) offense went back to work in the fifth. Thibodeaux walked to start the frame, then Page moved the pinch runner Ava Heirdorn to second with a single before the pair advanced a base on a wild pitch. Two batters later, with the base pads loaded, Kresta drew a walk to score the sixth Warhawk run.

ULM took advantage of a miscue on the mound, scoring page on a wild pitch, trimming the Jaguars' lead to 9-7. The final run of the fifth crossed the plate when McKay brought home Shaw from third on a sacrifice fly to center field.

The two teams continued to trade runs as USA (14-26, 4-16) came through with two runs in the sixth, building an 11-8 lead in the process.

With the deficit at three, ULM again placed the lead runner on base, this time with Rylee Lara reaching on a hit by pitch. Thibodeaux was plunked two batters later and the pair advanced one base each when Shaw drew a two-out walk. Kresta worked the count in her favor, drawing the second walk in as many hitters to score the ninth run of the game for the Warhawks.

Despite a pitching change by USA, which put Samantha Yarbrough on the mound in favor of Alexis Reid, ULM got back-to-back walks by McKay and Kreps to tie the game at 11-11. The Warhawks took their first lead of the game with Mount at the plate, as Kresta sprinted home on a wild pitch.

Both Mount and Wrobel were hit by a pitch, which moved the ULM lead to 13-11 result of a run by McKay. With USA's bullpen unable to find the strike zone, Watts drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch that scored Kreps from third. Thibodeaux capped off the frame with a two-out, two-run single to center field that scored Mount and Wrobel in succession, giving ULM a 16-11 lead.

Jessie Watts (1-7) earned her first win of the season for the Warhawks, allowing four runs on seven hits over six complete innings with one walk and one strikeout.

Yarbrough (2-9), who allowed five earned runs without a hit over 1.2 innings, took the loss. She walked three, struck out three, hit three batters and threw four wild pitches.

The USA-ULM series concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 20, with the first game beginning at noon.
