ULM Softball Edges Georgia State, 5-4; Wins Second-Straight Sun Belt Series

ATLANTA – Jaclyn Kresta's two-run double to left-center field in the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the ULM softball team won its second Sun Belt Conference series in as many weekends, edging Georgia State, 5-4, in the series finale on Sunday, April 28.

ULM (11-39, 7-16 Sun Belt) scored two unearned runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good. With runners at first and second with two outs, Kresta doubled a 3-2 pitch into left center, scoring Blaire Wilson and Meagan Shaw for a 5-3 lead.

The Panthers answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. Skylar Mosel reached on a throwing error by the second baseman to open the frame, and two batters later, Arden Jobe doubled to right field, sending Mosel to third. Caitlin Ray followed with an RBI single up the middle as Georgia State pulled to within one at 5-4.

ULM put three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Sydney McKay opened the game with an infield single to the pitcher and stole second ahead of Korie Kreps, who walked on a full-count pitch. With one out, Brie Wrobel sent a 2-2 pitch over the center-field wall for a 3-run homer.

Georgia State (8-43, 5-19) scratched out a run in the bottom of the second, taking full advantage of a leadoff walk and two wild pitches. Mosel's sacrifice fly to left field scored Baylee Sexton as the Panthers cut their deficit to 3-1.

GSU managed to tie the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. With runners at second and third and one out, Remington Hasty delivered a two-run single to left field that scored Reagan Morgan and Alyssa Ward.

The Warhawks won the series finale despite being outhit by the Panthers, 8-6. McKay, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, also made a key defensive play, recording an assist by throwing out the potential game-tying run, in pinch runner Olivia Davis, at home in the bottom of the sixth.

Adrianna Chavarria (6-13), who allowed an unearned run on two hits in 1.2 innings, earned the win for the Warhawks. Jessie Watts, who worked three innings and surrendered one run on three hits with three walks, picked up her second save of the season. Watts pitched around a walk and single in the bottom of the seventh to preserve ULM's one-run lead.

Amanda Chance (0-16), who went 4.2 innings and permitted two unearned runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts, took the loss for the Panthers.

ULM closes out its home schedule with a three-game series against Sun Belt regular-season champion Louisiana Lafayette, beginning on Thursday, May 2 at 6 p.m.
