ULM Beach Volleyball Earns 4-1 Victory Over UNO Saturday

Beach Volleyball
MONROE, La. – The ULM beach volleyball team picked up its 15th win of the season, which tied the 2015 squad for the second most in program history, with a 4-1 victory over in-state rival New Orleans on Saturday, April 6.

The match, one of two scheduled for Saturday, was part of the two-day ULM Warhawk Challenge. The second match against Missouri State was canceled after multiple weather delays.

ULM (15-12) opened the match with a victory by the No. 5 tandem of Bailey Smith and Audrey Brooks, who rallied from a first-set loss for a 14-21, 21-16, 15-8 triumph over Ehize Omoghibo and Maxine Walsh. The Warhawks picked up their second point of the match as Elizabeth Moreland and Allie Kemp came through with a 21-13, 21-15 win against Rhyan Rand and Madison Miller in the fifth flight.

"It was an unbelievable showing today for our team," ULM head coach Sara Rishell said. "Audrey Brooks at the five was unstoppable today at the net. There were some shaky plays at the beginning, but Audrey and Bailey (Smith) adjusted quickly and ran the set from start to finish.

"Allie (Kemp) and Elizabeth (Moreland) did the same thing on court four. From start to finish, the pair fought hard and executed an efficient game plan. They brought a lot of communication and passion to their court and played solid all the way around."

ULM's No. 3 pair of Gabby Love and Kayla Gallant secured the team victory after outlasting UNO's Ally Carr and Victoria Corcoran in three sets, 17-21, 21-19, 17-15.

"Gabby (Love) and Kayla (Gallant) fought hard throughout their entire match," Rishell added. "There were a few balls that were miscommunicated, but in pressure situations, Gabby really kept her composure and delivered. There was a huge block at the end of set three that carried their momentum throughout the rest of the match. The two as a pair were able to stay relaxed and intense under pressure, and as a coach, I couldn't ask for more."

The Privateers (10-8) answered with a win by the No. 1 pair of Veronica Corcoran and Rachel Kuhn, who took down Tamara Merseli and Grace Convey by scores of 21-17 and 21-18.

ULM closed out the match with another victory as the No. 2 pair Catherine Griffith and Maile Sellers knocked off Blessing Dunn and Brianna Vega, 26-24, 21-13.

"Unfortunately, our Senior Day game was rained out, but we did get the chance to honor our seniors," Rishell said. "Tamara (Merseli), Catherine (Griffith), and Maile (Sellers) are huge components of our team. Without them, our team would be completely different. All three bring different elements on and off the court. I'm honored to have coached those three amazing human beings, and I look forward to seeing all of their success in the future."
