ULM Softball Defeats No. 3-Seed UTA, 5-2; Advances to Sun Belt Semifinals

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Freshman Adrianna Chavarria tossed her third-straight complete game and Jayden Mount hit another three-run homer as No. 8-seed ULM advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship semifinal with a 5-2 victory over No. 3-seed UT Arlington Friday afternoon (May 10).

The Warhawks will face No. 6-seed Coastal Carolina in the tournament semifinal on Saturday, May 11 at 10 a.m. with the winner advancing to play No. 1-seed ULL in the Championship Game at 1 p.m.

ULM is attempting to reach the Championship Game for the first time since 2008 when the then No. 7-seed Warhawks defeated No. 2 FAU, No. 3 Troy and No. 6 North Texas en route to a matchup against the No. 1-seed Ragin' Cajuns.

After Chavarria pitched around a two-out hit and walk in the top of the first, the ULM offense went to work against UTA starter JoJo Valencia. With one out, Korie Kreps took an 0-2 pitch up the middle for a base hit, and with two outs, Jessie Watts singled through the middle and advanced to second on the throw, sending Kreps to third. Brie Wrobel followed with an RBI single to left field, scoring Kreps from third for an early 1-0 lead.

UTA (30-26) answered with a run in the top of the second to tie the score at 1-1. KJ Murphy opened the frame with a double to left field and Shelbi Court followed with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Murphy from second base. It marked the first run allowed by Chavarria in 18.0 innings pitched in the conference tournament.

ULM (14-41) took the lead for good in the bottom of the third against reliever Randi Phillips. Sydney McKay reached on a bunt single to third base and Kreps followed with an infield single to shortstop. With two runners aboard, Mount hammered a 1-2 offering from Phillips over the left-center field wall for a three-run homer as the Warhawks built a 4-1 advantage. One day earlier, her three-run blast in the top of the 10th inning broke a scoreless tie against No. 2-seed Troy.

The Warhawks scratched out another run in the bottom of the sixth. Jaclyn Kresta was hit by a pitch from reliever Allie Gardiner to open the frame. Pinch runner Victoria Pederson stole second base and advance to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bailey Thibodeaux. Kennedy Page followed with a bunt single to put runners at the corners for Megan Shaw, who drove Pederson home from third with an RBI groundout to shortstop to give ULM a 5-1 lead.

The Mavericks, who placed at least one runner on base in each inning, refused to go quietly in the seventh. With one out, Whitney Walton walked and Krista Rude and Laura Curry followed with back-to-back infield singles to load the bases. Aileen Garcia reached on the third-straight infield single, which scored Walton from third as UTA cut its deficit to 5-2. With the bases still loaded, Reagan Wright came to the plate as the potential go-ahead run but lined out to the shortstop. Chavarria then got ahead in the count 0-2 against Murphy, who flied out to right field to end the game.

UTA, which outhit the Warhawks 9-7, stranded 10 bases runners. The Mavericks got multi-hit games from Curry (3-for-4) and Garcia (2-for-3, RBI). The top five batters in the ULM lineup accounted for six of the team's seven hits, with Kreps going 2-for-3.

Chavarria, who won her third consecutive tournament game improved to 9-14 on the season, allowed two runs on nine hits with three walks. In 24.0 postseason innings, she has permitted 17 hits, with only one going for extra bases.

Phillips (14-13), who worked 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts, took the loss for the Mavericks.
