New Orleans, La. - ULM third baseman
Chad Bell and utility player
Andrew Beesley have been selected to the 2019 All-Sun Belt Conference teams, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Bell is a first-team selection at third base, while Beesley is a second-team selection as a utility player. The duo are the first All Conference selections since
Anthony Herrera in 2017.
Bell settled in as the every day third baseman for ULM, and was consistently productive in the heart of the Warhawk order, slashing .333/.408/.676. Bell leads the Sun Belt Conference in home runs with 18 and ranks second in slugging percentage (.676) and total bases (142), seventh in RBIs (50) and eighth in hits (70). Bell elevated his play late in the season as the games started to mean more, pushing the Warhawks into their first postseason berth in five years. Bell enters the SBC Tournament on a 19-game hitting streak, picking up 10 home runs and 12 multi-hit games in the stretch, improving his batting average by over 50 points. Bell's 18 home runs are also one shy of the single-season ULM record, held by Corey Taylor with 19 homers in 1998.
Beesley has started in all 53 games for ULM, drawing starts at designated hitter, first base, left field and right field. Beesley has consistently produced for the Warhawks all season, typically hitting in the middle part of the order. He is slashing .337/.411/.439 while ranking10th in the SBC with 69 hits and is tied for seventh with 14 stolen bases. Beesley has also been disciplined at the plate, drawing 26 walks to 16 strikeouts. While most of his starts have come at DH, he has proven to be solid at three different defensive positions, committing just three errors in 100 chances. He was named SBC Player of the Week on April 9 after collecting four straight multi-hit games with three doubles and a home run. He is one of only two Warhawks to start every game this season, with his versatility allowing ULM coaches to be creative in setting the lineup for each game.
The Warhawks (24-29 overall, 12-17 SBC) open SBC Tournament play on Tuesday when they face South Alabama (30-25, 16-14) in Conway, S.C. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Springs Brooks Stadium. Links to live video, audio and stats are available at ULMWarhawks.com.
