Lafayette, La. - ULM junior right handed pitcher
Ty Barnes was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 29 to May 5, the organization announced Monday afternoon.
Barnes pitched the first complete game shutout by a ULM pitcher in four years (vs. Sam Houston State, Feb. 28, 2015) and the first by a ULM pitcher in Sun Belt Conference play in seven years (vs. Middle Tennessee, April 21, 2012). He scattered seven hits with one walk vs. UT Arlington, and allowed only one base runner to reach third base in picking up his fourth win of the season. Prior to Friday, Barnes had not pitched past 5 1/3 innings in any start this season. Barnes had to work out of a little trouble late in the game to preserve the shutout, giving up a leadoff double in the seventh inning, but used a pop up, line out and strike out to get out of the inning. In the eighth, he gave up a one-out double, but forced a pop up and a fly out to retire the side.
Barnes is the first ULM player to be honored by the LSWA this season.
Barnes was among a group of players nominated by their respective baseball sports information directors and selected by a panel of statewide media members.
The Warhawks (22-25, 10-13 Sun Belt) return to action at 6 p.m. Friday at Troy.
