New Orleans, La. - After throwing a complete game shutout against UT Arlington on Friday night, ULM junior right handed pitcher
Ty Barnes has been named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week, the SBC office announced Tuesday afternoon. The weekly honor is presented by Community Coffee.
It marks the second weekly honor for Barnes this week, after he was selected as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Barnes pitched the first complete game shutout by a ULM pitcher in four years (vs. Sam Houston State, Feb. 28, 2015) and the first by a ULM pitcher in Sun Belt Conference play in seven years (vs. Middle Tennessee, April 21, 2012). He scattered seven hits with one walk vs. UT Arlington, and allowed only one base runner to reach third base in picking up his fourth win of the season. Prior to Friday, Barnes had not pitched past 5 1/3 innings in any start this season. Barnes had to work out of a little trouble late in the game to preserve the shutout, giving up a leadoff double in the seventh inning, but used a pop up, line out and strike out to get out of the inning. In the eighth, he gave up a one-out double, but forced a pop up and a fly out to retire the side.
Barnes is the second Warhawk to earn a weekly honor from the Sun Belt this season after
Andrew Beesley was named Player of the Week on April 9.
Players are nominated for Sun Belt Conference weekly honors by their institution's sports information director. The conference's sports information directors then vote to select the winners.
The Warhawks return to action at 6 p.m. Friday at Troy.
