McKay Named All-Sun Belt First Team

MONROE, La. – ULM senior outfielder Sydney McKay, who ranks among the league leaders in hits (tied for second with 64), batting average (fourth at .400) and stolen bases (tied for second with 23), has been named to the All-Sun Belt First Team, as selected by the conference's head coaches. It marks the third year in a row that McKay has earned All-Sun Belt honors, including her second-straight first-team selection.
 
The 5-foot-10 McKay, the only Warhawk to have started all 51 games, leads the team in nine different statistical categories: batting average (.400), at-bats (160), runs (36), hits (64), total bases (77), slugging percentage (.481), on-base percentage (.452), stolen bases (23) and fielding percentage (1.000). She had 18 multi-hit games and put together an 11-game hitting streak during the second half of the season. The Pearland, Texas, native hit a team-leading .377 (29-of-77) in Sun Belt games.
 
McKay currently ranks among the NCAA Division I Top 10 active leaders in at-bats (second with 751), stolen bases (seventh with 128) and hits (eighth at 266).   
 
With two hits at Southeastern Louisiana on April 2, she became ULM's all-time hits leaders.
 
"Sydney is a master at her craft," ULM head coach Molly Fichtner said. "She works unbelievably hard on and off the field. The consistency she's displayed over her playing career is truly remarkable. I'm so happy for her! She's earned this!"
 
No. 8-seed ULM (11-40, 7-17) faces No. 5-seed Appalachian State (31-22, 13-13) in the opening round of the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship on Wednesday, May 8 at 12:30 p.m. in San Marcos, Texas. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
 
The winner of ULM-App State game will advance to play tournament host and No. 4-seed Texas State (28-23, 16-10) Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
