MONROE, La. –
Under fair skies and temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s, fourth-year ULM head coach Matt Viator sent his team through a 2-hour workout in shorts, jerseys and helmets on Friday, Aug. 2 to open preseason football camp.

"We're off to a good start," Viator said. "The guys came out with some excitement, energy and effort. I thought the players had a good attitude and really competed through every period. It was hot and humid, and I thought the guys encouraged each other to push through the 2-hour practice.

"We looked like a team and ran some good plays. We really want the players to embrace what preseason camp is all about. It's supposed to be tough and challenging. The focus is on improvement, attention to detail and establishing some consistency."

Viator welcomes back 45 returning lettermen, including 20 on offense, 22 on defense and three specialists.

The vocal leader on defense is fifth-year senior Donald Louis Jr., who has started 24 consecutive games at defensive end.

"Today, I made my last first walk from the locker room to the practice field for the start of preseason camp," Louis said. "I wanted to make that walk alone to reflect on the moment. You never know what to expect heading into a season. This is my hometown, and I know it's special to play here. You can't replicate what it's like to play with your teammates. It's really been a blessing to play here, and it would mean everything to play in a postseason bowl game as a senior.

"Great teams realize you begin winning games on the practice field. I love playing in Coach (Mike) Collins' defense because he knows how to put guys in position for success. This preseason, I'm focused on the little things. I've never been a freakish athlete, so I have to rely on playing with proper technique."

All eyes are on dual-threat quarterback Caleb Evans, who enters his third season as ULM's starter.

"Nobody has worked harder this summer than Caleb Evans," Louis said. "Caleb has always practiced hard and been a leader, but he has definitely taken greater ownership in this team. He knows there's a lot riding on his shoulders, and he's prepared."

The Warhawks will continue to practice in shorts, jerseys and helmets for the next three days, beginning at 9:05 a.m. ULM will don full pads for the first time in preseason camp on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 9:05 a.m.

"The first day in pads is like another first day," Louis said. "There's greater excitement when you practice in pads. As a player, you really look forward to the contact, the first hit. The entire team will erupt the first time someone gets knocked on his butt."

ULM opens the 2019 season against I-20 rival Grambling State on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. in Malone Stadium.
