Preseason Football Camp Update: Warhawks Don Full Pads

Football
MONROE, La. – Under partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 80s on Tuesday, Aug. 6, fourth-year ULM head coach Matt Viator sent his team through its fifth preseason practice, its first in full pads. The 2-hour workout concluded with a special teams period, dedicated to kickoff returns.

"I really was pleased with the (practice) tempo," Viator said. "We did a little bit more team-oriented and situational stuff today, which probably made things a little easier on their legs. I thought we did some good stuff, with solid execution on both sides of the football. We're making progress.

"With this week's practice plan, we're hitting on all situations and practicing different scenarios. We're right on schedule. We've been fortunate with the weather. We haven't had any rain, and we caught a break this morning with a little breeze. Hopefully, the weather will continue to cooperate.

"Once the players put on the equipment, it's different, and the guys managed that transition well today," Viator continued. "We did a lot of running those first four days without pads. We took that approach in an effort to try to build them up each day. Today was a good practice."

ULM's preseason (110-man) roster features 20 seniors, including 18 fifth-year players. The maturity level of this team is quite apparent to its head coach.

"For the first time in my tenure, we really can talk about a senior class," Viator said. "These seniors have been part of our system for four years now. So, they know what we expect, and they know what the coaches want. It's pretty cool to see those guys out there coaching the younger guys."

The Warhawks will continue to practice in full pads for the next two days before returning to shells (shorts, jerseys and helmets) for Friday's practice. ULM's first preseason scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10 at 9:55 a.m. in Malone Stadium.
