MONROE, La. – After falling to Central Arkansas 4-0 on Friday, the ULM soccer team will look to bounce back quickly as they travel to Baton Rouge to take on Southern on Wednesday. Match time is 6 p.m.
"They're a team that likes to pack it in," head coach Keyton Wheelock said. "We have to be patient. It's all about us being clinical in everything that we do."
In the loss to Central Arkansas, it was the first time the Warhawks (2-3-1) had been shutout in a game this season.
"We've got to solve some problems," Wheelock said. "You never want to give up four goals."
However, ULM has had a productive season so far with quick strikers, a solid back defensive line and excellent goalie play.
Southern (1-4) lost their first four games of the season, but are coming off of a 2-1 win over Nicholls State. The Jaguars have been outscored 17-4 this season.
ULM holds an undefeated advantage over Southern. The Warhawks have beaten the Jaguars in each of their seven meetings. The last win for ULM came in 2015 with a 1-0 shutout.
"We've got to make sure we're moving the ball and moving it quickly to create opportunities," Wheelock said. "Records and stats may say one thing, but we're both new teams. I never take anything for granted."
In their five games played this season, Southern has given up over 100 shots and 40 corner kicks. However, the Jaguars have also had solid goalie play with having made over 30 saves so far this season.
"We have to make sure we're firing on all cylinders and hitting our peak at the right time," Wheelock said. "We have to take care of business. You can't overlook anybody."
