MONROE, La. - ULM battled tough heat and a tough Northwestern State team to come away with its second win of the season on Friday night, 1-0.
"This is 100 percent a team win," head coach Keyton Wheelock said.
NSU started out with the attack quickly, taking five shots in the first half. Maddie Scott led the charge for the Lady Demons, but Rian Kasner, who got her first start of the season, held strong and kept NSU at bay. Kasner's four saves on the night would all come at the right time.
The pace slowed at the end of the first half and both teams would go into the locker room tied 0-0.
"Sometimes, you prepare and come out and things just don't seem to be working," Wheelock said. "But when you play with heart and grit and find a way, you show your true character."
ULM would start the second half as a new team. Melissa Taft would use excellent execution to score the Warhawks' only goal of the game 19 minutes into the second half.
"Lissa's strikes were fantastic," Wheelock said. "She had great turn and placement."
Taft wasn't the only one making a run at the net. Victoria Altieri ended the night with two shots, but couldn't find a way to score. However, the Warhawks would hold off NSU to win the game, 1-0.
ULM will travel to Conway, Arkansas next Friday to take on Central Arkansas. The game will start at 5 p.m. Follow along with all things Warhawk Soccer on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram at @ULM_Soccer.
