Warhawks Fall to Host Lamar; Schaffer Named to All-Tournament Team

BEAUMONT, Texas - The ULM Warhawks rounded out day two of the Katrinka Crawford Invitational on Saturday against the host Lamar Cardinals, falling 3-0.

"Today was a tough day for us having to play the home team in their comfort zone," head coach Charlie Olson said.

Kate Blasingame led the Warhawks (4-3) in kills during the game with 11. Mikaela Worley led the defensive side for ULM with 32 digs.

Lamar (4-2) scored the first point of the game, but a kill by Kathryn Raschilla would give ULM its first point of the game. The Cardinals would take command of the first set, but a kill by Blasingame put the Warhawks back on track.

Lamar took a 14-9 lead in the first set with a kill by Mercedes Dannich. The Cardinals went on to score seven unanswered points. An assist by McKinley Thiede and a kill by Worley kept ULM alive, but a kill by Malaysia Murdock ended the set to give the Cardinals a 25-18 set one win.

"Lamar played extremely well and served us out of system most of the match," Olson said.

Lamar jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start set two. Olson called a timeout and used the opportunity to regroup the team. The Warhawks came out of the timeout with fire and a well-timed kill by Blasingame gave ULM its first point of the set. Blasingame and Raschilla followed that up with a block to give the Warhawks some momentum.

A service ace by Blasingame and a block by Worley and Hailey Hughes allowed ULM to bring Lamar's lead down to five.

The two teams would trade points for the majority of the set, but a kill by Cali Assaley would shift the momentum back in the Warhawks' favor. However, it wasn't enough to hold off the Cardinals. Lamar would win set two, 25-22.

"We didn't capitalize on opportunities, yet we still saw moments of greatness," Olson said.

ULM jumped out to a quick start in set three behind an Albany Schaffer service ace. Worley would follow that up with a kill to give the Warhawks a 5-4 lead.

The two teams would again trade points before Kaitlyn Gil was able to turn the momentum back in favor of Lamar with a kill. The Cardinals wouldn't let off the gas and rolled to a 25-16 set three win.

"Kudos to Lamar," Olson said. " It's time for us to regroup and get back in the gym on Monday."

Schaffer earned all-tournament recognition.

"Albany was an integral part of our team this weekend," head coach Charlie Olson said.

A native of Hays, Kansas, Schaffer ended the weekend with 45 digs, 14 assists, two service aces and played in all 13 sets. Schaffer's biggest game of the weekend came against Prairie View A&M, where she recorded 22 digs during the five-set win.

"Albany put some great numbers up this weekend," Olson said. "She's the definition of a team player and was the glue to our defense on the back row."

The Warhawks will stay on the road and travel to Ruston next weekend for the Louisiana Tech tournament. ULM will take on Mississippi Valley State Friday at 4 p.m. before taking on both Nicholls State and the host Lady Bulldogs on Saturday.
