BATON ROUGE, La. – The ULM track and field team began its season by earning 27 Top-10 finishes at the LSU Purple Tiger, which took place Friday, Jan. 10 in Baton Rouge. Three Warhawk competitors—
Grant Girtman,
Jakob Fudge and
Jasmine Scott-Kilgo—were responsible for multiple Top-10 performances at the event.
Girtman earned a third-place finish in the men's pole vault, clearing 4.70 meters, after being edged out by Riccardo Klotz (Southeastern Louisiana) and Cameron Reed (LSU), who tied for first with a mark of 5.15 meters.
Girtman capped off the men's 60-meter dash by closing fourth with a time of 6.94. He was joined among the Top-10 in the event by Warhawk teammates
Josh Newton (6.91) and
Jhavonte Perry (7.10), who were ninth and 10th, respectively.
Fudge capped off the meet by finishing second in the men's shot put (14.05 meters) and third in the weight throw with a heave of 17.37 meters. Fudge wasn't the only ULM competitor to close in the Top-10 of those events, as
Darryl Givens was eighth in the shot put (11.31 meters) and Jacob Houston was eighth in the weight throw with a toss of 13.92 meters.
Scott-Kilgo was the lone Warhawk woman to post multiple Top-10 finishes on the afternoon, enjoying a third-place performance in the long jump (5.88 meters) and a sixth-place outing in the 60-meter dash (7.84). Teammate
Rebekka Schubert was also responsible for a Top-10 finish in the long jump, placing fifth in the event with a leap of 5.68 meters.
The Warhawk quartet of
Nolan Smith (400-meter dash),
Eric Hawkins (800-meter run),
Brianna Sam (weight throw) and the aforementioned Fudge (shot put) shared the honor of top finishers at the meet, second, in their respective events.
Smith crossed the line second in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 51.85, while teammate
Cullen Davis was eighth with a mark of 54.09. Hawkins was one of two Top-10 finishers in the men's 800-meter dash, capping off the race in 1:57.53, while Adrain Harris closed in ninth with a time of 2:08.21
Sam's heave of 19.48 meters in the weight throw was bested by only Janee Kassanavoid (Body First), who finished with a mark of 22.74 meters. Warhawk teammate
Jadyn Walden, who also took part in the event, was ninth following a heave of 15.40 meters.
Both Fiebe Tengrootenhuyse and
Micaiah Dendy reached the podium for ULM in the 400-meter dash and triple jump, respectively, as they finished third place. Tengrootenhuyse, who posted a time of 58.64 in the 400-meter dash, finished ahead of fellow Warhawk
Brittney Roberson, who claimed fifth with a mark of 58.92.
Meanwhile, Dendy completed a jump of 11.77 meters in the triple jump, which was just behind Lynnika Pitts (Tiger Olympians), who was responsible for a leap of 13.04 meters and Kyndal McKnight (unattached), who was second with a mark of 12.98 meters. ULM's
Jala Richard opened the slate with a seventh-place finish in the triple jump by sticking a landing of 10.89 meters.
Reggie Shallowhorn made his ULM debut and finished fourth in the men's high jump by clearing 1.90 meters. The top mark in the event belonged to Southeastern Louisiana's Slavko Stevic, who finished with a mark of 2.10 meters.
Sam Healy put together a fifth-place finish in the men's 60-meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 8.21. Teammate
Michael Hamburg completed the event in seventh with a time of 8.32.
Gregor Findlay was the top distance performer for the Warhawk unit, finishing the men's 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:20.89.
ULM was also well represented by its relay teams as the combination of Perry,
Zachary Kilpatrick, Hawkins and
Bryce Moore finished fourth in the men's 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:30.53. The women's 4x400 unit, which consisted of Roberson,
Jasmine Hall,
Sydney Curry and Tengrootenhuysen, wrapped up the event in 4:08.36, to finish seventh.
The indoor season continues for ULM next week when the Warhawks compete at the Ted Nelson Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M, in College Station on Friday, Jan. 17.
