Eric Hawkins completed the 800-meter run at the 2020 Ted Nelson Invitational in a time of 1:53.89 and in the process claimed the fourth first-place finish in an 800-meter race in his Warhawk career in the meet that took place at Texas A&M on Friday, Jan. 17.
Hawkins, who posted three victories in the 800-meter races at the Louisiana Classics (1:55.19), Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays (1:52.64) and Southern Miss Open (1:55.17) a season ago, posted his second Top-3 finish in 2020 after crossing the line second in the 800-meter race at the LSU Purple Tiger a week ago. He has now reached the podium on nine occasions in his ULM career.
Joining Hawkins among Top-3 finishers in Friday's meet were
Jasmine Scott-Kilgo and
Brianna Sam, who earned second in the women's long jump and weight throw, respectively, as well as
Jakob Fudge, who emerged third in the men's weight throw. In total, 13 Warhawks finished in the Top-10 in the second meet of the indoor slate.
Scott-Kilgo leapt her way to second with a mark of 5.98 meters, finishing behind Jasmyn Steels (Northwestern), who posted a mark of 6.37 meters. Steels broke her own meet record (6.19), which came on Jan. 11, 2019. ULM's
Rebekka Schubert narrowly missed the Top-10 in the long jump with a mark of 5.50 meters and was edged out by LaJarvia Brown's (Texas A&M) mark of 5.53 meters.
Scott-Kilgo was the lone Warhawk to claim two Top-10s at the meet, finishing sixth in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.94.
Sam was the top ULM performer in the women's weight throw with a heave of 19.04 meters, marking her fifth straight Top-3 finish in as many meets. Sam, along with first-place finisher Alanna Arvie (McNeese State), were the only two competitors to reach at least 19 meters in the event.
Fudge, who enjoyed a third-place finish in the weight throw a week ago, reached a distance of 17.68 meters. That mark establishes a new personal best for Fudge, who's previous personal-best was set a week ago (17.37 meters). The combination of Dominique Williams (Ragin' Cajuns) and Phillipe Barnett (Barton County), who posted marks of 19.71 meters and 18.66 meters, respectively, claimed first and second.
Micaiah Dendy finished just outside the Top-3 in the women's triple jump with a mark of 11.86 meters, edged out for third by McNeese State's Malaiya Jenkins who put together a leap of 11.95 meters.
Grant Girtman cleared 4.76 meters in the men's pole vault event to finish fifth for the Warhawks. He was joined among fifth-place finishers by Reggie Swallowhorn, who closed out the high jump with a mark of 1.99 meters.
Darshon Turk earned the first Top-10 of his collegiate career in the 60-meter hurdles after completing the men's portion of the event in 8.35. Teammate
Josh Newton, who wrapped up the 60-meter dash in 6.97, gave the men's unit six Top-10 performances on the afternoon.
Brittany Roberson ended the women's high jump in seventh, clearing 1.58 meters in the process. The Warhawk women's unit, which emerged with seven Top-10 finishers, was rounded out by
Kennedy Gerard and Fiebe Tengrootenhuyse, who finished ninth in the high jump (1.58 meters) and 10
th in the 400-meter dash (57.46), respectively.
ULM continues the indoor slate in two weeks when the Warhawks head to Houston, Texas for the Houston Invitational on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
