Warhawks Swept by Mavericks in Series Finale

MONROE, La. – The ULM volleyball team dropped a tight first set and couldn't recover as UT Arlington completed the weekend sweep with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-14) win over the Warhawks Saturday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

"I thought we performed well against an extremely scrappy UTA team," ULM head volleyball coach Charlie Olson said. "We ran a balanced offense, served tough and were in system most of the match. We just couldn't capitalize at the end of the first two sets and finish. We will need to make a few adjustments as we now turn to ULL on the road."

ULM (1-15 overall, 0-11 Sun Belt Conference) led for much of the first set, but never led by more than three. ULM led 23-20 on a kill by senior Ina Gosen. After UTA (8-1, 8-1) closed within two points, ULM took a timeout. The Warhawks used a UTA ball handling error to go up 24-22 and had two chances at set point. However, UTA won the next three points to earn its own set point attempt. An attack error tied the set back up at 25, but UTA then scored back-to-back points to claim the first set, 27-25.

The Warhawks led 10-4 early in the second set, but UT Arlington fought back. The Mavericks scored 10 of the next 12 points to claim a 14-12 lead. The Warhawks tied the set up at 14, 15 and 17 before a 3-0 spurt gave UTA the lead for good. The Mavericks led by as much as four at 23-19 before taking the set, 25-22.

UTA used the momentum to take charge in the third set, scoring five of the first seven points to lead 5-2. A 6-0 run midway through the set gave the Mavericks all the separation they needed as they cruised to a 25-14 win to claim the set and the match, 3-0.

Senior Haley Coulter led ULM with 10 kills and 10 digs. Junior McKinley Thiede added 14 assists. Hogan tacked on 16 digs.

The Warhawks visit the Ragin' Cajuns at 6 p.m. Friday.
