Bobcats Top Warhawks, 2-1

MONROE, La. – Freshman Lena Göppel scored her first career goal, an equalizer in the 48th minute, but Texas State went back ahead midway through the second half and held on for the 2-1 win at Brown Stadium Friday night.

"Our effort and endeavor were tremendous this evening," ULM head coach Sean Fraser said. "We made two mistakes and were punished."

The Bobcats scored the only goal of the first half when Emma Jones used a good through ball to find Sydney Kammer heading for the goal. Kammer slid the shot past ULM goalkeeper Hailey Hillock and into the net for the 1-0 advantage in the 11th minute. The lead held to halftime.

ULM had opportunities to score in the first half. Ashley Johnson's shot in the fourth minute was stopped by Texas State keeper Beth Agee in the bottom right corner of the frame. The Warhawks attempted four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes but could not score off them.

In the 48th minute, the Warhawks were on the attack when the ball was sent into the box but deflected back out to the top off a Bobcat defender. Göppel gained control of the ball and lofted a shot up and over Agee and bounced it into the back of the goal to tie the match at 1.

Texas State answered in the 64th minute. Bailey Peschel took a pass from Kiara Gonzales and cruised into the box before firing a shot into the back of the net to regain the lead at 2-1.

The Warhawks had a few more chances to tie the match. Their best opportunity came off a corner kick by Janet Stopka, finding Göppel for a header in the box. However, Agee made the save to keep the Bobcats in front as they held on for the 2-1 win.

"As we move forward, there are parts of today's performance we should be really happy about," Fraser said. "In the future, these are games we should expect to win."

ULM outshot Texas State 10-8, but each team put four shots on goal. Göppel had four shots, with two on goal, to lead the Warhawks.

ULM continues the homestand at 12 p.m. Sunday against Arkansas State.
