MONROE, La. - ULM plays its final road nonconference contest of the 2020-21 season at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, at I-20 rival Louisiana Tech at the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston.

Thursday's contest is the first between the two schools since Dec. 11, 2017, when the Lady Techsters defeated the Warhawks 71-49 in Ruston. It is just the seventh meeting since the 1995-96 season, which was the final season of an annual series in which the two teams played at least once per season that dated back to 1974.

Sophomore guard Linda van Schaik gave ULM a much-needed spark in Tuesday's loss to Mississippi Valley State. Van Schaik did not enter the game until the 4:08 mark in the third quarter and proceeded to score a team-high 16 points while hitting three 3-pointers.

ULM displayed offensive efficiency early against Mississippi Valley State, scoring on its first six possessions and shooting 6-of-7 from the field.

The Warhawks put three scorers in double figures against MVSU. Van Schaik led the way with 16 points, while sophomore Gara Beth Self had 14 points and four assists and junior Kierra Brimzy tallied 13 points with three rebounds and three assists.

Thursday's game is the 56th all-time meeting between ULM and LA Tech. The two sides have played classic games against each other, including ULM's 85-76 win over the Lady Techsters in the 1985 NCAA Midwest Regional Final at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, sending the then-Northeast Louisiana Lady Indians to a Final Four appearance. ULM, LA Tech and LSU are the only three Louisiana programs to reach at least one NCAA Final Four.

The game also marks a return to Ruston for ULM Associate Head Coach Christie Sides. Sides played for the Lady Techsters and Hall of Fame head coach Leon Barmore from 1998-2000, and then spent two seasons as an assistant coach under the late Kurt Budke from 2002-2004.

Louisiana Tech (3-1 overall, 0-0 Conference USA) will play its first game in nine days on Thursday vs. ULM. The Lady Techsters have been off since Dec. 8, when they defeated Jackson State, 73-66, at the Thomas Assembly Center. Louisiana Tech is 3-0 at home this season with wins over JSU, Grambling State and McNeese State.

The Lady Techsters have three players scoring in double figures this season. Junior guard Keiunna Walker leads the way at 15.5 points per game. She poured in 22 points vs. Jackson State last week. Junior forward Brianna Harris is posting 13.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Harris had her best game of the season at Texas, scoring 25 points with eight rebounds against the Longhorns. Sophomore forward Anna Larr Roberson has come off the bench in all four games to average 10.0 points per game and is tied for the team lead with 5.5 rebounds per game. She had a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double in the season-opener vs. McNeese.

Louisiana Tech is scoring 74.8 points per game while giving up an average of 66.0 points per game. The Lady Techsters are averaging 38.8 rebounds per contest, 5.5 boards better than the opposition.

SELF IMPROVEMENT
Sophomore Gara Beth Self saw her numbers drastically improve after taking over the starting point guard position for the remainder of the 2019-20 season in the final non-conference game of the year vs. Mississippi Valley State. Self was handed the reigns after senior point guard Lauren Fitch suffered a season-ending injury at Texas Tech. Self flourished inside of Sun Belt Conference play, averaging 12.8 points and 2.5 assists over 34.5 minutes per game. She scored in double figures in 12 of 18 conference games, including an eight-game streak from Jan. 8 to Feb. 5. Self scored a career-high 28 points on the strength of 5-of-11 3-point shooting and added two rebounds, three assists and five steals at then-Sun Belt leading Coastal Carolina on Feb. 27. Self was named Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and Honorable Mention All-Louisiana by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
