ULM, McNeese Tennis Match Ends in 3-3 Deadlock

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The ULM tennis team wrapped up its clash with intrastate rival McNeese in a 3-3 tie on Saturday, Feb. 22. It marked the first tie for the Warhawks since April 15, 2016, when they tied Southern Miss, 3-3, at Heard Stadium.
 
ULM (2-1-1) took advantage of a walkover win at No. 3 doubles by the duo of Jelena Lopicic and Emilia Alfaro to open the afternoon. McNeese rebounded with a 6-3 victory from Matilde Mulatero and Sofia San Jose Moreno, who downed Madalina Grigoriu and Giovanna Pereira, at the No. 2 position. With the first point of the match on the line, ULM's Jimena Garbino and Emma Billon muscled their way past No. 1 doubles pair of Marija Mastilovic and Carlotta Romito to claim a 6-4 win.
 
McNeese State (1-7-1) evened the score at 1-1 as Multero emerged with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lopicic at the No. 4 singles position. The Warhawks regained the lead at 2-1, thanks to Billon's 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Romito in a match-up of No. 2 seeds. Mastilovic posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Garbino in the battle of No. 1 singles to tie the match at 2-all. The Lady Cowgirls grabbed their only lead of the afternoon at 3-2 when fifth-seeded Hanna Blinouskaya overcame an opening set loss to down Pereira by scores of 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
 
Since both teams vacated the No. 6 position, the outcome came down to the No. 3 singles position. ULM's Grigoriu came through with a clutch, three-set win over Mareno, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, forcing the 3-3 deadlock.
 
ULM returns to the court for its final scheduled non-conference match at Mississippi State on Sunday, March 8 at 4 p.m.
