Tiger Invitational Final Results

AUBURN, Ala. – The ULM men's golf claimed to its fourth Top-3 finish in the last two seasons under director of golf/head coach Tim Baldwin as the Warhawks placed second at the Tiger Invitational on Tuesday, March 10 at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Alabama.

The Warhawks, who captured the team title at the Border Olympics two weeks ago, finished among the top two teams on the leaderboard in consecutive tournaments for the first time since the 2013-14 season, when they won the Little Rock First Tee Collegiate Classic (March 24-25) and followed up with a first-place showing at the ULM Wallace Jones Invitational (March 31-April 1).

ULM, which fired a final-round 291 to close at 1-over-par 865 (280-294-291) on Tuesday afternoon, finished 11 strokes off the pace by No. 15 Auburn. The host Tigers claimed the top spot on the team leaderboard after carding a final-round 277, closing the 54 holes at 10-under-par 854 (281-296-277).

Sophomore Otto Van Buynder was ULM's top individual finisher at the Tiger Invitational, placing fifth with a 4-under-par 212 (69-72-71). Van Buynder, who capped off the Border Olympics tournament in a tie for eighth, joins Guillaume Fanonnel as the only Warhawks with multiple Top-10 finishes during the 2019-20 season. Fanonnel accomplished the feat by placing second at the UTSA/Lonestar Invitational and fifth at the David Toms Intercollegiate.

Van Buynder's final-round 71 came by virtue of 13 pars and five birdies, which he recorded on the fourth, 11th and 12th greens. He finished five shots behind individual champion, North Alabama's Jackson Wedgeworth who carded a 9-under-par 207 (68-68-71) at the three-day tournament.

Fanonnel moved up six spots on Tuesday's leaderboard to finish in a three-way tie for 11th alongside Auburn's Andrew Kozan and South Alabama's Mathias Lorentzen with a 1-under-par 215 (70-75-70). Fanonnel, the 57th-ranked player according to Golfstat, has now finished in the Top 20 in all six tournaments this season. He maintained the streak on Tuesday by carding 10 pars and five birdies in the third round, notching birdies at the first, sixth, 12th, 15th and 16th holes.

"It was a great tournament for the guys," Baldwin said. "We had great results from both Otto and Guillaume. We beat three teams this week in the Top 50 and validated our result at the Border Olympics. We're looking forward to the new rankings that come out later this evening and we're hopeful that we can move inside the Top 100."

Senior Joao Girao posted the third-best finish by a Warhawk at the event, ending in a seven-way tie for 49th with a 7-over-par 223 (70-73-80). Girao was unable to maintain the rhythm established in his first two rounds, closing out the tournament with 11 pars and one birdie at 16 in the final round.

Andoni Etchenique capped off the Tiger Invitational in a five-way tie for 49th after shooting an 8-under-par score 224 (71-78-75). He shaved three strokes off his second-round score, thanks to 10 pars and three birdies, including two on the front nine at the fourth and fifth holes.

ULM freshman JC Tvergaard duplicated Etchenique's final-round 75, finishing tied for 89th with a 16-over-par 232 (83-74-75). Tvergaard posted 11 pars and two birdies on Tuesday.

The Warhawks return to the links on March 16-17 for the 35th-annual Louisiana Classics, hosted by the Ragin' Cajuns at the Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette.
