ULM Men’s Golf: Tiger Invitational Preview

Men's Golf
MONROE, La. – Less than two weeks after capturing the program's ninth team title under ULM Director of Golf and head coach Tim Baldwin at the Border Olympics, the Warhawks return to the links at the Tiger Invitational, hosted by Auburn University from March 8-10 at the par-72, 7,289-yard Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Alabama. The 18-team field features three programs ranked among Golfstat's Top 50.

The three-day, 54-hole tournament begins on Sunday, March 8 with a shotgun start at 7:50 a.m.

The 18-team field includes Arkansas State, No. 15 Auburn, Austin Peay, No. 43 Charlotte, Chattanooga, Florida Atlantic, Georgia State, No. 41 James Madison, Kennesaw State, Louisiana Tech, Mercer, Morehead State, North Alabama, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Toledo, ULM and Western Kentucky. Thanks to its Border Olympics Championship, the Warhawks advanced 28 places to No. 112 in the latest Golfstat rankings.

ULM's lineup features senior Guillaume Fanonnel, sophomore Otto Van Buynder, senior Andoni Etchenique, freshman JC Tvergaard and senior Joao Girao. The Warhawks are looking to secure their fifth Top-10 finish in seven tournaments in 2019-20.

Fanonnel has finished inside the Top-20 of every tournament this season, including the UTSA/Lonestar Invitational (Sept. 16-17), where he enjoyed his best career finish (second) after finishing 8-under-par with a 208 (69-68-71). He has fired a score of 73 or better in 15 of his last 16 rounds, dating back to the third round of 2019 NCAA Stanford Regional. Fanonnel has carded three 68s during that stretch and the only score higher than 73 was a 75 in the first round of the Border Olympics where he placed 11th.

Van Buynder was firing on all cylinders at the Border Olympics, wrapping up play in a three-way tie for eighth at 1-under-par 215 (74-70-71). He became the second Warhawk this season to earn a Top-10 finish, joining Fanonnel who placed second at the UTSA/Lonestar Invitational last September. Van Buynder capped off his best third-round performance of the season by recording 11 pars and four birdies.

Etchenique has been one of ULM's most consistent players in 2019-20, posting four Top-25 finishes. His best finish (12th) came at the David Toms Intercollegiate (Oct. 5-6), where he carded a 5-under-par 211. Etchenique has carded a 73 or lower in 12 of 18 rounds this season.

Tvergaard, who makes his third appearance of the season for ULM, looks to carry over the momentum from a 20th-place performance at the Border Olympics into this week's Tiger Invitational. He had three rounds of 73 in Laredo, Texas, two weeks ago.

Girao is striving to find consistency in his game, with his best finish (31st) coming at the Arizona Intercollegiate (Jan. 27-28). In that tournament, he finished at 5-over-par 218 (72-73-73), which marked his lowest combined score of the season.
