AUBURN, Ala. – The ULM men's golf team continued to fire on all cylinders when play began at the Tiger Invitational on Sunday (March 8), capping off the opening round in second place with an 8-under-par 280. The Warhawks, who trail only host and No. 15 Auburn on the leaderboard, showed no signs of 12-day gap since they last took the course and captured first place finish at the Border Olympics.

The Warhawks are sandwiched on the team leaderboard by Auburn, who has two teams competing in the event. The Tigers fired a 9-under-par score of 279 to hold a one stroke lead over ULM, while the Auburn B team is at 4-under 284. Louisiana Tech is in fourth place with a 1-under-par 287.

As a team, ULM recorded 23 birdies Sunday – the second-highest first-round total in the 20-team field.

Sophomore Otto Van Buynder, who finished in a nine-way tie for third at 3-under-par 69, led four Warhawks listed inside the Top 20 on the individual leaderboard. Van Buynder, who is coming off a career-best eighth-place finish in the Border Olympics, continued his hot shooting at the par-72, 7,289-yard Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Alabama. His opening-round performance consisted of 11 pars and five birdies, including three birdies on the front nine at the second, fourth and sixth holes.

ULM seniors Guillaume Fanonnel and Joao Girao are locked in a five-way tie for 12th, one stroke off the pace established by Van Buynder and two shots behind individual leaders Jackson Wedgeworth (North Alabama) and C.J. Easley (Auburn), who finished the first round atop the leaderboard at 4-under-par 68.

Fanonnel, who opened the tournament ranked 67th by Golfstat, came through with a team-best seven birdies and six pars in the opening round. He closed out the back nine with four birdies and three pars. He has carded a 73 or better in six of his seven rounds this spring.

Girao posted his second-lowest first-round score of the season (70) to open the Tiger Invitational, one stroke off from his opening-round total at the Border Olympics. His day included 11 pars and five birdies, which included three on the front nine at the fourth, fifth and seventh holes. Girao posted six pars and two birdies, on the 14th and 15th greens, to wrap-up the back nine.

ULM's Andoni Etchenique also completed the opening round among the tournament's top contenders, firing a 1-under-par 71. Etchenique, who is one of four players tied for 17th, carded 10 pars and five birdies along the way to his ninth sub-74 round of the spring.

"The guys played great today, especially considering the cool and windy conditions," ULM Director of Golf Tim Baldwin said. "We're looking forward to tomorrow's challenges as our mindset is solid."

ULM's scorecard was rounded out by freshman JC Tvergaard, who shot an 11-over-par 83 to close out the first round. Tvergaard tallied seven pars and one birdie, which came at the 14th hole.

Round two of the Tiger Invitational begins on Monday, March 9 at 7:50 a.m.
