LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Little Rock knocked down seven first half 3-pointers, sprinting out to an early advantage and controlling the game, topping ULM, 71-36, Friday afternoon at the Jack Stephens Center.
"I really felt for our group this week," ULM head coach
Brooks Donald Williams said. "We've had a lot of distraction. Just about everybody is battling some sort of injury at this point."
Ky'lie Scott paced the Trojans (7-6 overall, 3-3 Sun Belt Conference) with 23 points and hit five of her six 3-pointers in the first half. Scott opened the scoring with a trey, while Teal Battle and Alayzha Knapp followed with one each before Scott buried another for a 13-4 lead with 4:49 left in the opening quarter.
Little Rock continued to add to its lead as Scott hit another trey late in the quarter to push the lead to 14 at 23-9. The Trojans led 23-11 after the first quarter.
ULM (2-11 overall, 0-7 SBC) closed as close as 11 in the second quarter when
Kierra Crockett picked off a pass and scored on a fast break layup to get within 25-14. However, the Warhawks did not score for the next 6:19 as Little Rock went on a 17-0 run to lead 42-14. The Trojans led 46-19 at halftime.
The Warhawks slowed Little Rock's offensive pace in the second half, but still struggled on the offensive end.
Gara Beth Self's jumper brought ULM within 25 at 49-24, but it is as close as the Warhawks would get in the second half. Little Rock led 58-26 after three quarters.
The Trojans pushed the lead to as much as 38 in the fourth quarter before picking up the 71-36 win.
Whitney Goins came off the bench to lead ULM with 12 points. Crockett just missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
"We had two starters go down this week and it didn't help that
Kierra Crockett sustained an ankle injury during the game," Williams said. "We just have not been healthy and had yet another week of very little practice. That shows against physical teams like Little Rock."
Along with Scott's 23 points, Battle added 17 and Knapp had 10 for Little Rock. Trojan point guard Mayra Caicedo, the Sun Belt's assist leader, issued 17 assists to one turnover while adding four points and seven rebounds.
The Warhawks and Trojans wrap up the series at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center. Links to live video, audio and stats are available on the women's basketball schedule page at ULMWarhawks.com.
