ULM Shut Out by Georgia Southern, 2-0

MONROE, La. – Georgia Southern made two first half goals stand up as the Eagles defeated the ULM soccer team, 2-0, Sunday at Brown Stadium.
 
It was the second consecutive loss for the Warhawks (7-2-1 overall, 1-2-1 Sun Belt Conference) after opening the season unbeaten in their first eight matches.
 
ULM had the first chance of the day when freshman Taylor Henry fired a shot in the ninth minute that was stopped by Georgia Southern goalkeeper Michaela English. The Eagles had the next chance, coming in the 23rd minute, when ULM junior keeper Hailey Hillock mad the save on Elis Nemtsov's shot.
 
Sophomore Madi Garza and freshman Inge Konst also had chances in the first half for ULM, but were unable to beat English.
 
Georgia Southern broke through in the 33rd minute when Nemtsov scored for the 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Olivia Durham found the back of the net to double the lead to 2-0.
 
In the second half, ULM freshman Mara Grutkamp had a shot knocked away by the Eagles in the 50th minute. Durham fired a shot in the 62nd minute for Southern, but Hillock made the save.
 
Georgia Southern's best chance to extend the lead came in the 64th minute on a penalty kick, but Marcela Montoya's shot was saved by Hillock.
 
ULM junior Courtney Marten got a shot away in the 77th minute, but English made another save. ULM would not tally another shot on goal for the remainder of the match.
 
ULM outshot Georgia Southern, 14-11, but the Eagles had more shots on goal, 6-5. Henry had five shots, with one on frame, for ULM. Grutkamp tallied three shots, with one on goal. Nemtsov and Durham had three shots each, with two on target, for Southern.
 
Hillock made three saves for ULM while English had four for Georgia Southern.
 
ULM visits Arkansas State at 1 p.m. Thursday.
