MONROE, La. - The ULM women's basketball team tries to bounce back from a season-opening loss on Saturday when they visit Southern Miss for a 2 p.m. tip-off at Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg. The Warhawks lost Tuesday's season-opener at Grambling, 69-61, while Southern Miss is 1-0 after a 72-42 win on Tuesday against William Carey.
Second-year freshman
Kyren Whittington had a breakout game in her second career start on Tuesday. She led ULM in scoring with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including a 5-of-6 clip from the free-throw line. Her 32 minutes ranked as the second most on the team behind third-year sophomore
Gara Beth Self.
Fifth-year senior center
Diamond Brooks had a strong start to the season, pouring in 14 points on 5-of-5 shooting and a 4-of-4 rate from the foul line while tracking down six rebounds, including four on the offensive end. However, Brooks left the game with 3:08 to play in the fourth quarter after suffering an apparent leg injury.
True freshman guard/forward
Amaya Ford made an immediate impact in her collegiate debut. She scored 13 points, including nine in the third quarter as ULM erased an eight-point halftime deficit. She shot 5-of-9 from the field and collected four rebounds.
ULM head coach
Brooks Donald Williams returns to Hattiesburg, where she spent three seasons as an assistant coach to USM's Joye Lee-McNelis from 2004-07. Williams also was an assistant for McNelis at Memphis in the 2003-04 season. McNelis picked up her 500th career win on Tuesday, becoming just the 85th Division I women's basketball coach to reach the milestone. She is one of just 35 active coaches to reach the 500-win mark.
