Terry  Bowden Weekly Press Conference

FIRST-AND-10 –
• The ULM Warhawks go on the road for the second consecutive week on Saturday when they visit Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos, Texas, to meet the Texas State Bobcats. ULM is coming off a 59-28 loss at App State to drop to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Sun Belt Conference. Texas State has lost three straight games, including Saturday's 45-0 loss at the Ragin' Cajuns to fall to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the SBC.

ULM has lost 11 consecutive road contests, dating back to its last trip to Bobcat Stadium, when the Warhawks defeated Texas State, 24-14, in a midweek, prime-time game on Oct. 10, 2019.

• Saturday's game marks the 18th meeting between ULM and Texas State. The Warhawks lead the series, 12-5. Texas State won last year's meeting in Monroe, 38-17, on Sept. 19. ULM has won four of the last five matchups, including the last two contests in San Marcos: 24-14 on Oct. 10, 2019, and 45-27 on Oct. 7, 2017. Texas State last defeated ULM in San Marcos, 16-3, on Nov. 19, 2015. The Warhawks are 6-2 all-time in San Marcos.

• ULM's offense has come alive during the second half of the 2021 season, averaging 417.8 yards total offense and 30.3 points over the last four games.

ULM recorded season highs for rushing attempts (51), rushing yards (231) and rushing touchdowns (3) at App State. It marked the Warhawks' first 200-yard rushing game since the 2019 season finale at UL Lafayette (a span of 17 games; 37 rushes for 240 yards and 2 scores vs. the Ragin' Cajuns).

• Chandler Rogers has appeared in all eight games, including starts in the last five games (2-3 record) following a chest injury to junior Rhett Rodriguez. The 6-foot, 188-pound Rogers has completed 71-of-115 passes for 962 yards, eight TDs and three interceptions. He is one of 20 freshmen quarterbacks starting in the NCAA FBS, and his 149.7 pass efficiency rating ranks sixth among the group.

Rogers played just four series (14 total snaps) at App State before exiting the game early in the second quarter with a bruised biceps.

During ULM's recent three-game homestand, he completed 56-of-83 throws (.675) for 802 yards (267.3 ypg.), eight TDs and one interception. His passing efficiency rating during that stretch was an impressive 178.0.

• Sophomore quarterback Jiya Wright, who played nearly three full quarters at App State after starter Chandler Rogers was sidelined with a bruised biceps, set career highs across the board and directed all four of ULM's touchdown drives.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Wright hit 9-of-17 throws for 158 yards, including a 13-yard TD strike to Dariyan Wiley, and two interceptions. He completed passes to seven different receivers. Wright also led the Warhawks in rushing with 91 yards on 20 carries, including his first career rushing TD on a 3-yard run around right end late in the second quarter.

He led back-to-back 75-yard TD drives, covering 10 and 16 plays, in the third quarter. Late in the fourth quarter, Wright managed an 11-play, 60-yard drive that ended in a turnover near the App State goal line.

• ULM linebackers Traveion Webster and Zack Woodard, who rank 1-2 on the team in tackles, rank among the Sun Belt Conference's Top 10 in tackles.

Webster leads the Warhawks with 59 tackles (22 solos, 37 assists), with 2.5 for losses including half a sack, a pass break-up and two quarterback hurries. His 7.4 tackles per game is good for fourth in the SBC.

Woodard, who ranks second on the team in tackles (54), tackles for loss (4 for 18 yards) and sacks (2.5 for 16 yards), is seventh in the conference, averaging 6.8 stops per game.

The duo has combined for 113 total tackles, with 6.5 for losses (27 yards) including three sacks (21 yards).

• Through the first nine weeks of the 2021 season, ULM and Boise State have faced the nation's most difficult schedules, according to NCAA figures. The Warhawks' first eight opponents have a combined record of 42-15 (.737).

• Fifth-year senior placekicker Calum Sutherland is second in the Sun Belt Conference and ranks 20th in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision with 1.5 field goals made per game. He is second to Arkansas State's Blake Grupe (.812, 13-for-16) for the SBC lead in field-goal percentage at .750 (12-for-16). Through eight games, he leads the Warhawks in scoring with 56 points.

Sutherland made all four of his extra-point attempts to remain perfect on the season last Saturday at App State. He did not attempt a field goal in the contest. Sutherland is 20-for-20 on extra-point attempts this season.

Sutherland made both of his field-goal attempts on Oct. 23 vs. South Alabama, hitting from 39 yards in the second quarter for the 17-10 lead and again from 40 yards with 6:28 to play in the fourth quarter to give ULM a 10-point lead at 41-31.

• ULM is second in the Sun Belt Conference in turnover margin at +0.50 per game. The Warhawks have recorded 14 takeaways (6 fumble recoveries, 8 interceptions) in eight games. By comparison, ULM totaled 10 takeaways (6 fumble recoveries, 4 interceptions) in 10 games during the 2020 season.

• Since taking over the ULM program, first-year head coach Terry Bowden has emphasized the importance of playing disciplined football and his team has taken the message to heart. The Warhawks rank as one of the least-penalized teams in the Sun Belt Conference and NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision. ULM leads the SBC and is tied for ninth in FBS at 4.29 penalties per game. The Warhawks also lead the SBC and are tied for 13th in FBS at 39.9 penalty yards per game.

ULM/TEXAS STATE SERIES NOTES –
Saturday's game marks the 18th meeting between ULM and Texas State.

THE LAST MEETING –
Texas State 38, ULM 17 (Sept. 19, 2020, in Monroe, Louisiana): ULM gave up too much, too early and couldn't claw back on Sept. 19, 2020, at Malone Stadium.

The Warhawks spotted Texas State a 17-point first-half lead and dropped a 38-17 decision in their 2020 home and Sun Belt Conference opener.

ULM (0-2, 0-1) slowed Texas State over the final two quarters and quarterback Colby Suits enjoyed a breakout performance in his second collegiate start. But Texas State's early offensive onslaught was too much to make up.

Suits completed 35-of-53 passes for 377 yards and two touchdowns and hit 11 different receivers in a solid outing. His 35 completions tied the sixth-highest single-game total in ULM history.

However, the Warhawks came up with just three points on three red-zone trips in the second half that could have helped them reverse course.

ULM wasn't able to get star running back Josh Johnson untracked as he finished with 51 yards on 17 carries. ULM gained just 67 yards on the ground.

Texas State quarterback Tyler Vitt was a dual threat on this night with 256 passing yards and 82 on the ground as his team attacked early. Jeremiah Haydel was his top target with six catches for 152 yards and two touchdowns.

Texas State opened the game with an 85-yard drive to go up 7-0 with 11:21 left in the first quarter. Calvin Hill's 4-yard touchdown run finished a 10-play drive that included a 36-yard completion from Vitt to Marcell Barbee, a ball tipped by ULM cornerback Corey Straughter before the catch.

Junior receiver Jevin Frett introduced himself to the locals with a 20-yard touchdown catch from Suits to tie the game with 2:52 left in the first quarter. The seven-play, 40-yard drive followed a defensive stop that saw Buck safety Keilos Swinney register a sack with a forced fumble that led to a punt after the big third-down play.

Texas State answered with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Vitt to Haydel and regained the lead at 14-7 with 42 seconds to go in the first. The Bobcats needed 2:09 to cover 75 yards in six plays.

ULM and Texas State traded miscues early in the second quarter, with the advantage going to the visitors.

ULM's Jahquan Bloomfield recovered a fumble off a punt at the Texas State 28 with 14:46 left in the second quarter. But on the first play of the ensuing series, Johnson lost a fumble recovered by the Bobcats and returned 18 yards out to the Texas State 38.

Texas State turned the turnover into points and a 21-7 lead by marching 62 yards in seven plays. Vitt, who had a 21-yard run on the drive, finished with an 8-yard touchdown scramble.

ULM's next drive ended with a turnover on downs as Johnson was stuffed and fumbled on fourth-and-1 from the Warhawks 45. The Bobcats moved into scoring position and led 24-7 after Seth Keller's 40-yard field goal with 6:17 to go before the half.

The Warhawks pulled within 24-10 with 1:34 left in the second quarter after a successful 11-play, 75-yard drive. Suits, who completed 7-of-9 passes for 68 yards on the march rolled out right and found Chandler Whitfield on third-and-goal for a 5-yard score. The touchdown was a career-first for the red-shirt freshman receiver.

Texas State, which had scored 17 unanswered points before ULM's touchdown, struck again on its next offensive play with a 75-yard touchdown pass from Vitt to Haydel and carried a 31-14 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Vitt passed for 233 yards and two scores in the half while Haydel had five catches for 145 yards and two touchdowns.

After 45 total points in the opening half, the second half didn't deliver as many fireworks for either team but for ULM, it was all about a comeback that didn't quite materialize.

A personal foul by the Bobcats on a punt return set up ULM at the Texas State 38 for its second series of the third quarter.  Facing fourth-and-7 from the 11, Davis Hughes kicked a 28-yard field goal to pull ULM within 14 points at 31-17 at the 8:42 mark.

ULM kept Texas State scoreless in the third quarter and outgained Texas State, 112 to 19, to keep itself within striking distance but couldn't convert on fourth-and-8 from the Bobcats' 16 on the second play of the final period as a 13-play, 72-yard drive fizzled on an incomplete pass.

Down by 14 points, ULM's last meaningful offensive series started at its own 3 with 4:29 left in the game.  The Warhawks converted a fourth-and-17 from the 31 on a 19-yard pass from Suits to Josh Pederson. But again, ULM came up empty as cornerback Jarron Morris intercepted Suits in the end zone and returned it 100 yards for a final touchdown.

THE LAST MEETING AT BOBCAT STADIUM –
ULM 24, Texas State 14 (Oct. 11, 2018 in San Marcos, Texas): ULM needed a workmanlike effort to win on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018.

A workhorse running back and a resilient defense was there to carry the load.

With a national audience on ESPNU watching, Josh Johnson rushed for 114 yards and scored two touchdowns to help the Warhawks to a 24-14 win over Texas State at Bobcat Stadium.

The win evened ULM's record at 3-3 overall and gave the Warhawks a first-place perch at 2-0 in the Sun Belt Conference's West Division. Texas State fell to 2-4 overall, 1-1 in the league.

For Johnson, it was another stellar performance in a breakout year. The 100-yard game was his fourth of the season for the junior, who has become one of the Sun Belt's offensive stars in 2019.

ULM shook off the rigors of a road game on a short week just five days after falling to Memphis at Malone Stadium.

Stagnant throughout the second half, the ULM offense was able to milk the clock late in the fourth quarter when it counted the most. On a drive that started at the ULM 14 with 8:27 left, the Warhawks worked their way to the Texas State 24 and faced fourth-and 1 with 2:26 remaining in the game.

After two timeouts, Texas State was offsides and ULM had a first down at the 19. Two plays later, Austin "Bus" Vaughn darted into the end zone from 11 yards out to put ULM ahead 24-14 with 1:46 to go. ULM's game-clinching drive covered 86 yards on 13 plays and chewed 6:41 off the clock.

With fresh legs, Vaughn took over the workhorse role after Johnson was hit on the hand and fumbled late in the third quarter. Vaughn gained 29 valuable yards on five carries to help seal the win.

Cortez Sisco Jr. led the defense with nine tackles while Austin Hawley added seven tackles and forced and recovered a fumble. Kerry Starks made two sacks and Sam Miller had one as ULM limited Texas State to 338 yards and just 91 on the ground.

If the Warhawks had any issues lingering with their turnaround, it wasn't evident early in the game.

ULM took a quick 7-0 lead by scoring on its opening drive as Johnson pounded in a 1-yard touchdown run to cap a seven-play, 75-yard drive. The Warhawks had four plays of more than 15 yards on the march, including a 25-yard pass from Caleb Evans to Jonathan Hodoh to open the game.

Johnson's 8-yard touchdown run put ULM ahead 14-0 with 13:15 left in the second quarter. The Warhawks converted on third down twice while covering 80 yards in 11 plays

The Bobcats responded with their best drive of the game to close the scoring gap to 14-7 on Calvin Hill's 3-yard touchdown run with 9:03 left in the first half. Texas State's 12-play, 75-yard drive included a near interception, a fourth-down conversion and burned 4:12 off the clock.

ULM's Jared Porter kicked a 34-yard field goal to extend the lead to 17-7 with  3:27 remaining in the half. ULM's nine-play, 68-yard drive stalled in the red zone with a pair of incomplete passes.

The Warhawks carried their 10-point advantage into the break after outgaining the home team, 262-180, in the first half. Johnson rushed for 72 yards on 13 carries while Evans was 10-of-20 for 150 yards passing with one interception.

ULM's defense came through with several big plays to start the second half. Texas State lost a fumble to ULM's Hawley on its first series, then saw its next drive stall on sacks by Hawley and Miller, then end on downs as the Warhawks sniffed out a fake punt and Sisco made the stop.

A sudden turn of events late in the third quarter changed the complexion of the contest. ULM still had its 10-point lead and was in the red zone again when Johnson lost a fumble at the Texas State 12 and the Bobcats recovered, returning it out to the 38.

On his first play in the game, quarterback Tyler Vitt hit Trevis Graham Jr. on a 62-yard touchdown pass and the Bobcats trailed 17-14 with 54 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The three-point margin made for a tense fourth quarter until the offense found its footing at the end. Corey Straughter's interception with 1:24 remaining in the game put the finishing touches on ULM's win.

THE LAST TIME OUT –
App State 59, ULM 28 (Oct. 30, 2021 in Boone, North Carolina): Kidd Brewer Stadium turned into a house of horrors for ULM on Saturday in a 59-28 loss to App State.

In a measuring stick game against one of the Sun Belt's elite teams, ULM stumbled early while hardly resembling the upstart squad that came in riding a two-game winning streak.

ULM (4-4, 2-3 Sun Belt) made just six turnovers combined through their first eight games but tossed that positive trend out the window with five against the Mountaineers.

Four turnovers led to 28 points in a rough first half, which ended with the Warhawks trailing 49-7.

The Warhawks staged a more competitive second half as quarterback Jiya Wright posted career highs across the board with 91 yards rushing and a touchdown while completing 9-of-17 passes for 158 yards with one score and two interceptions. Wright entered the game in the second quarter in place of injured starter Chandler Rogers (bruised biceps, non-throwing arm) and spearheaded a positive charge after halftime.

After gaining just 88 yards in the first half, ULM finished with 391 yards and outscored App State 21-10 in the second half.

Overall though, the Mountaineers (6-2, 3-1 Sun Belt) treated their homecoming crowd of 29,321 to a 521-yard outburst as quarterback Chase Brice passed for 256 yards and four touchdowns.  Brice transferred from Duke but started his career at Clemson when Bowden was there as a graduate assistant.

A disastrous first quarter saw the Warhawks commit two turnovers leading to 14 points and a 21-0 deficit.

ULM's defense stuffed App State for a turnover on downs on the opening drive; however, the Mountaineers found the end zone on their second offensive series. A 3-yard touchdown run by Camerun Peoples capped an eight-play, 72-yard drive and App State led 7-0.

One play later, Andrew Henry fumbled and App State recovered at the ULM 28. The Mountaineers took a 14-0 lead as Malik Williams scored on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Brice.

Another ULM turnover led to another touchdown for App State. After Trey Cobb intercepted Rogers' first-down pass at the ULM 45, the Mountaineers scored again on a 1-yard Brice touchdown pass to Caleb Spurlin with 2:08 left in the first quarter.

The second period brought more of the same.

Rogers appeared to score on a 30-yard run after bouncing up from a rolling tackle on fourth-and-4, but the touchdown was overturned and instead the Warhawks were handed a turnover on downs.

With a 10-play, 72-yard drive, the Mountaineers went ahead 28-0 as Peoples dashed 26 yards for his 12th touchdown of the season.

Another 1-yard touchdown pass from Brice to Spurlin concluded a five-play, 69-yard drive and put App State up 35-0 with 7:11 to go before halftime.

Wright, who followed Rogers in the second quarter, directed a four-play, 42-yard scoring drive to finally get the Warhawks on the scoreboard with 4:01 left in the half. A 40-yard pass to Jevin Frett to the App State 2 set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Wright, the first of his career.

However, ULM's third turnover of the half, a Wright interception, allowed App State to score again with 39 seconds to go before the break. The Mountaineers led 42-7 after Brice's 14-yard touchdown toss to Corey Sutton.

Then App State scored off a pick-six as time expired to grab a commanding 49-7 advantage. Steven Jones intercepted Wright and returned the ball 14 yards for the Mountaineers.

After a nightmarish start, ULM showed its fight in the third quarter.

ULM opened the second half on a more positive note, covering 75 yards in 10 plays to cut the score to 49-14. Dariyan Wiley cradled a 13-yard touchdown pass from Wright to finish the drive.

App State extended the lead to 52-14 on Chandler Staton's 31-yard field goal.

The Warhawks used a 16-play, 75-yard drive to cut the score to 52-21 on Abraham Alce's 2-yard run with 26 seconds remaining in the third. ULM gained 160 yards and collected eight first downs while possessing the ball for 12:04 in the quarter.

A 7-yard touchdown run by Nate Noel pushed the App State lead to 59-21 with 10:22 left in the game. Noel led App State with 132 rushing yards on 17 carries.

ULM scored on a bizarre play in the fourth quarter as Wright fumbled after an 18-yard run, but Jakyle Holmes recovered and ran 68 yards for a touchdown. His run cut the margin to 59-28 at the 9:58 mark.

The Warhawks had a chance to score another touchdown late but reverted to their earlier form as Alce fumbled on the goal line with 1:32 left in the game.

ULM HAS FACED THE NATION'S TOUGHEST SCHDULE THROUGH THE FIRST NINE WEEKS –
Through the first nine weeks of the 2021 season, ULM and Boise State have faced the nation's most difficult schedules, according to NCAA figures. The Warhawks' first eight opponents have a combined record of 42-15 (.737).

ROGERS TAKES CHARGE –
Chandler Rogers has appeared in all eight games, including starts in the last five games (2-3 record) following a chest injury to junior Rhett Rodriguez.

Rogers, who set career highs for pass completions (25), pass attempts (35), passing yards (369), passing touchdowns (4) and total offense (409 yards) to lead ULM to a 41-31 victory over South Alabama, was selected as one of the eight Manning Award "Stars of the Week" as well as Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week. In addition, Rogers was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Offensive Player of the Week.

Rogers completed TD throws of 12 yards to Jared Sparks, 9 yards to Boogie Knight, 21 yards to Fred Lloyd Jr. and 81 yards to Will Derrick. His four TD passes match the highest single-game total by a ULM quarterback since 2017 (Caleb Evans vs. Arkansas State). His 81-yard strike to Derrick with 1:07 left in the third quarter matched the 10th-longest pass play in school history.

He completed passes to nine different receivers and led the Warhawks to scores on five of six possessions during one stretch (four TDs and one field goal). Rogers also picked up 40 yards rushing on 15 carries. The Warhawks scored 17 unanswered points to close out the game, turning a 31-24 deficit into a 10-point win.

The Mansfield, Texas, native completed 16-of-25 throws for 225 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in ULM's 31-28 upset victory over Liberty. In the third quarter, Rogers went 9-for-9 for 91 yards, including TD strikes of 12 yards to Andrew Henry and 14 yards to Zach Rasmussen as the Warhawks rallied from a 14-0 halftime deficit to take a 28-14 lead. Late in the fourth quarter, he directed a seven-play, 57-yard drive that resulted in Calum Sutherland's game-winning 53-yard field goal. Rogers accounted for 45 of the 57 yards on the decisive drive, including a 33-yard completion to Derrick on a third-and-5 play and a 12-yard scramble on third down to set-up the game-winning kick. He completed passes to eight different receivers and added 42 rushing yards on 25 carries.

Rogers had his first 200-yard passing game on Oct. 9 vs. Georgia State, completing 15-of-23 passes for 208 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also led the Warhawks in rushing for the second consecutive game, picking up 72 yards on 14 carries.

WRIGHT GAINS VALUABLE PLAYING TIME AT APP STATE –
Sophomore quarterback Jiya Wright, who played nearly three full quarters at App State after starter Chandler Rogers was sidelined with a bruised biceps, set career highs across the board and directed all four of ULM's touchdown drives.

DERRICK RECORDS FIRST CAREER 100-YARD RECEIVING GAME –
Junior Will Derrick set career highs with five receptions for 135 yards against South Alabama and scored his first career touchdown on an 81-yard bomb from Chandler Rogers for the go-ahead score (38-31) with 1:07 to play in the third quarter. Derrick picked 57 yards after the catch against the Jaguars, including 47 on the scoring play. His TD reception tied the 10th-longest pass play in ULM history and equaled the 19th-longest catch in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision this season.

Three of Derrick's five receptions against USA resulted in first downs.

Through eight games, Derrick ranks fourth on the team in receptions with 12 for 211 yards (17.6 avg.) and one score.

BEWARE THE BOOGIE KNIGHT –
Junior inside receiver Boogie Knight ranks 12th in the Sun Belt Conference, averaging 3.6 receptions per game. The 5-foot-10, 191-pound Knight leads the Warhawks in receptions (29) and receiving yards (357). Fifteen of his 29 catches have resulted in a first down (52 percent). He also has 11 receptions of 15 or more yards.

For the third time on the season, Knight matched his career high with six receptions on Oct. 23 against South Alabama. He accounted for 75 yards and his first career receiving touchdown on a 9-yard pass from Chandler Rogers in the second quarter.

Knight was limited to two catches for 24 yards against Liberty on Oct. 16, but made a one-handed catch with the assistance of his helmet on ULM's first scoring drive in the third quarter. The play was ranked as the No. 1 play on ESPN's SportsCenter at Night Top 10.

Knight had five grabs and matched a season-high with 78 yards, including a 40-yard reception to set a new season-long, against Georgia State on Oct. 9.

After getting targeted just once against Troy, Knight made an immediate impact at No. 16 Coastal Carolina on Oct. 2 with a team-high four receptions for 47 yards. Three of his receptions came in the first quarter.

In ULM's 12-7 win over Jackson State on Sept. 18, Knight again matched his career best with six catches for 78 yards. In his ULM debut at Kentucky on Sept. 4, he had six receptions for 58 yards. Four of his catches produced first downs against the Wildcats, including third-down grabs of 14 and 15 yards from Rhett Rodriguez on ULM's first scoring drive (12 plays for 43 yards).

Knight ranks No. 14 among active NCAA FBS leaders in combined kick (punts and kickoffs) returns with 1,401 career yards. He also has accounted for 2,536 career all-purpose yards, which ranks No. 80 among active FBS players.

Knight, a transfer from Akron, previously set career highs for receptions (6) and receiving yards (121) against Eastern Michigan in 2019.
