KATY, Texas – Stephen F. Austin scored the first eight points of the game and never gave up the lead in an 80-53 win over ULM to wrap up the Van Chancellor Classic Sunday night at the Merrell Center.
ULM was led by 14 points and nine rebounds from fifth-year senior
Kierra Crockett, while true freshman Vici Woods came off the bench to record her first-career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Aiyana Johnson led four SFA players in double figures with 14 points.
SFA (7-1) pushed out to an 8-0 lead on a bucket by Zya Nugent with 7:31 left in the first quarter. ULM (2-6) closed the gap to four when Crockett scored off a putback to get within 12-8 with 1:48 remaining in the quarter. However, SFA scored the final four points of the quarter and led 16-8 after one.
The Ladyjacks pushed the lead into double figures in the second quarter, going up as much as 17 on a free throw by Avery Brittingham to lead 27-10 with 6:16 left in the half. The Warhawks cut the deficit back to 13 on a jumper in the paint by true freshman
Aasia Sam to close within 29-16 with 4:01 left in the half. SFA rolled down the stretch of the half, outscoring ULM 14-4 to end the half, building a 23-point halftime lead, 43-20.
SFA steadily built its lead in the third quarter, eventually leading by 40 at 68-28 on a 3-pointer by Angel Scott. The Ladyjacks led 69-31 after three quarters.
In the final frame, ULM chipped away at the large deficit, bringing the final margin down to 80-53.
The Warhawks outrebounded SFA, 48-39, but committed 26 turnovers to 10 for the Ladyjacks. SFA had 27 points off turnovers to nine for ULM.
