2021-22 ULM Basketball Notes: Game 7 vs. Centenary
 
THE STORYLINE –
ULM returns to Fant-Ewing Coliseum after playing its last three games away from home. The Warhawks play three in-state opponents during the three-game homestand.
 
Junior guard Koreem Ozier and graduate guard Andre Jones have scored in double figures in the last four games. Ozier tops the Warhawks' scoring column at 11.5 points per game after leading ULM in the last three contests.
 
Wednesday marks the 50th anniversary of the first game played (Dec. 1, 1971, against Sam Houston) in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
 
Centenary and ULM have played 35 previous times in a series that dates back to the Warhawks' first season in 1951-52. The Warhawks have won the last three meetings, including an exhibition win (Nov. 11, 2016).
 
THE STARTING FIVE –
• ULM opens the month of December with three consecutive games back at home, beginning with Centenary on Dec. 1, the 50th anniversary of the first game in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Warhawks have one final home game in 2021 on Dec. 18 vs. Southern Miss before they hit the road for three-straight games.
 
• Four Warhawks are currently averaging double figures in scoring: Koreem Ozier (11.5), Andre Jones (11.3), Trey Boston (10.5) and Thomas Howell (10.2). ULM is ranked third in the Sun Belt in scoring offense, averaging 75.8 points per game.
 
• Through six games, ULM head coach Keith Richard has been pleased with his team's willingness to share the basketball and make the extra pass. The Warhawks are averaging 15.8 assists per game, up from the 2020-21 average of 13.7 per game. Three ULM players have totaled double figures with junior guard Elijah Gonzales leading the charge at 21 (3.5 per game), graduate guard Andre Jones with 16 (2.7 apg.) and junior guard Koreem Ozier with 12 (2.0 apg.).
 
• In its last four games, ULM has the advantage in scoring off the bench by an average of nearly 10 points (ULM 28.3 ppg. to opponents' 19.0 ppg.). The Warhawks also own the paint, by an average of 24.0 points (ULM 47.5 ppg. to opponents' 23.5 ppg.).
 
• ULM posted its highest single-game 3-point field-goal percentage and its second-highest total of 3-pointers (8) at SMU. Junior guards Koreem Ozier (3) and Elijah Gonzales (2) combined for five treys. Ozier tied his season-best total and leads the team with 12 made so far this season.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS –
5 — The Warhawks have posted undefeated home records five times in the 51-season history of Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Mike Vining guided three of his teams to those perfect marks: 1990-91 (14-0), 1992-93 (14-0), 2001-02 (12-0). Orlando Early had a 14-0 record in Fant-Ewing in 2006-07 and current head coach Keith Richard went 13-0 in the 2015-16 season. Lenny Fant owns the single-season record for most home wins with 15 in 1978-79.
 
62.9% — The first half against SMU produced an overall field-goal percentage of .536 (15-28) and 12-18 (.629) efficiency from inside the arc. Freshman F Thomas Howell went 6-of-7 in the first half (.857) vs. the Mustangs and he leads the team in shooting with a .659 percentage.
 
130 — The Warhawks have reached the 100-point mark 82 times in their history, most recently with a 114-59 win over Champion Christian in the home opener Nov. 16. ULM posted its highest single-game point total in a 130-76 win over Arkansas-Monticello in Fant-Ewing Coliseum during the 1996-97 season.
 
136 — Four Warhawks played at least 31 minutes at SMU Sunday and were on the court 136 of the possible 200 minutes: Thomas Howell (31), Andre Jones (32), Koreem Ozier (34) and Russell Harrison (39+), who subbed out with 26 seconds left in the game.
 
462 — The ULM men's basketball team has 462 wins inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum against only 204 losses for a .694 winning percentage at home.

Centenary won its third-straight game as the Gents completed a regular-season sweep over Millsaps with a 67-62 win in Shreveport Tuesday night.
 
Senior guard AJ Hall earned Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Player of the Week honors as he led the Gents with a career-high 21 points with five treys (5-6 3FGs) and 8-of-10 shooting from the field overall.
 
Centenary is ranked in the top three of the SCAC in 14 different stat categories and leads the league scoring defense, steals per game, turnover margin and turnovers forced.
 
Grad transfer forward Jarrell Taylor has reached double figures in five of Centenary's six regular-season games after posting a career-high 24 points and 13 rebounds in the first win over Millsaps. Taylor is shooting 53 percent from the floor and 48 from beyond the 3-point arc. He's also Centenary's top rebounder at 6.3 per game.
 
Gents head coach Chris Dorsey, a strong proponent of the Princeton offense, was in his first season in Shreveport when the two teams last played in 2017-18. The Gents finished 8-4 and 7-3 in SCAC play in the abbreviated 2020-21 season and reached the semifinals of the SCAC Tournament in an impressive follow-up to their NCAA Tournament appearance and SCAC Tournament Championship in 2019-20.
 
ULM/CENTENARY SERIES NOTES –
Wednesday's game marks the 36th meeting between ULM and Centenary. The Gents lead the all-time series, 19-16, with the first meeting coming in ULM's first year as a program in 1951-52. ULM and Centenary competed for three seasons together as members of the Trans America Athletic Conference from 1979-80 through 1981-82. The Warhawks have won the last three meetings – all in Monroe – including an exhibition win on Nov. 11, 2016, 96-63.
 
ULM head coach Keith Richard has a 7-3 career record against the Gents, including the exhibition victory.
 
THE LAST MEETING –
ULM 74, Centenary 51 (Nov. 20, 2017, in Monroe, La.): Travis Munnings and Sam McDaniel combined for 36 points as ULM closed out its non-conference schedule with a 74-51 victory over Centenary. It was the third-straight win for the Warhawks.
 
There were two ties and four lead changes in the first six minutes. A three-pointer from Cedric Harris gave Centenary a 13-11 lead, but Brandon Newman followed with a jumper to spark a 15-0 run as ULM raced out to a 41-22 lead with 3:06 left in the first half. The Gents went scoreless for 5:32 as the Warhawks took control of the game. ULM led 47-27 at the intermission.
 
McDaniel scored 13 of his 17 points in the opening half and Munnings added 12. ULM shot 66 percent (19-of-29) from the field in the first half, including 6-of-11 (.545) from behind the three-point arc.
The Warhawks opened the second half with a 12-2 spurt and Newman's layup gave ULM its largest lead at 59-29 with 15:13 left. For the game, ULM hit 53 percent (29-of-55) of its field-goal attempts and outrebounded Centenary, 39-27. The Warhawks held a 40-16 edge in points scored in the paint.
 
Five Warhawks scored in double figures. Munnings recorded his first double-double of the season and 12th of his career with 19 points and 13 rebounds while McDaniel finished with 17 points. ULM also got 12 points from Marvin Jean-Pierre, 11 from Michael Ertel and 10 from Newman.
 
LAST TIME OUT –
SMU 74, ULM 67 (Nov. 28, 2021, in Dallas, Texas): SMU outscored ULM, 24-7, over the final 5:45 to turn a 10-point deficit into a 74-67 victory Sunday afternoon as the Mustangs improved to 5-0 in Moody Coliseum this season. Emmanuel Bandoumel (11) and Kendric Davis (10) combined to score 21 points during the decisive stretch.
 
There were two ties and four lead changes in the first half.
 
A reverse layup by Andre Jones in transition sparked a 13-6 run as ULM moved out to a 24-16 lead on Thomas Howell's hook shot from inside the lane with 7:51 remaining in the first half. A pull-up jumper from Elijah Gonzales in the lane gave the Warhawks a 10-point advantage at 28-18 with 6:24 on the clock. The Mustangs went more than six minutes without a field goal, missing four consecutive shots. SMU put together a 16-6 spurt and tied the score at 34-all on Bandoumel's 3-pointer from straightaway with 49 seconds to go in the opening half. The Warhawks took a 36-34 lead into the locker room on Luke Phillips' layup, off an assist from Jones, with :06 to go.
 
ULM (2-4) shot 54 percent (15-of-28) from the field in the first half, including 3-of-10 from 3-point range. Howell netted 12 first-half points, hitting 6-of-7 shots from the floor, and collected four rebounds. Seven different Warhawks scored in the first 20 minutes.
 
With the scored tied at 44-all, Gonzales connected on a 3-pointer from the top of the circle to fuel a 16-6 run as ULM matched its largest lead at 10 points, 60-50, on Russell Harrison's turnaround jumper off the right block with 7:19 left in the second half. SMU, which experienced a scoring drought that lasted 3:57, hit only 1-of-7 field-goal attempts during one stretch. Bandoumel connected on back-to-back 3s – one from the top of the circle and another from the right wing – to key the comeback. The Mustangs reeled off 11-straight points and took their first lead since 6-5 (18:07 mark in the first half) at 61-60 on a deep trey by Davis from the top of the circle with 3:15 remaining. SMU's run reached 13-0 as Bandoumel's rebound basket pushed the lead to 63-60. ULM cut its deficit to 63-62 on Trey Boston's pull-up jumper from the right baseline with 2:29 on the clock, but that was the closest the Warhawks could get down the stretch. The Mustangs iced the game by converting 5-of-6 free-throw attempts in the final 19 seconds and the final score marked their largest lead.
 
The Warhawks led for 33:27 in the game.
 
SMU (5-3) scored 22 points off ULM's 15 turnovers, with 17 of those coming off 12 second-half miscues. The Mustangs outscored the Warhawks from the free-throw line, 17-5, and outrebounded the visiting team, 43-33, including a 17-4 edge on the offensive glass.
 
For the game, ULM hit 48 percent of its field-goal attempts, including 8-of-21 from beyond the 3-point arc (38 percent). The Warhawks recorded 17 assists on 27 made field goals (63 percent).
 
Davis made 7-of-15 field-goal attempts, including 4-of-9 3s, and all eight free-throw attempts to finish with a season-high 26 points to pace the Mustangs. He also added seven rebounds and seven assists. Bandoumel scored a career-best 21 points, hitting 6-of-13 shots from the floor including 4-of-8 3-pointers.
 
Koreem Ozier, who fouled out with 3:55 left in the game, led the Warhawks with 15 points on 5-of-9 field-goal shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Howell, who hit 6-of-9 field-goal attempts, matched his career high with 13 points to go along with eight rebounds and a career-best five assists. ULM also got 13 points and a season-high five assists from Jones.
