MONROE, La. - The ULM women's basketball team concludes the non-conference schedule at 2 p.m. Monday when they entertain Mississippi Valley State at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. It is the sixth game in an eight-game homestand for the Warhawks.
Monday's game marks the fourth all-time meeting between ULM and MVSU. The two teams have met in each of the last three seasons. ULM won the first two meetings, 72-65 on Dec. 9, 2018, and 74-66 on Dec. 29, 2019, before MVSU won last year's matchup, 53-51 on Dec. 15, 2020. All three meetings have been at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
ULM struggled offensively in an 81-54 loss to McNeese on Saturday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Warhawks shot 28% from the floor (16-of-58) and just 1-of-10 from 3-point range. It marked the second-lowest shooting percentage for the Warhawks this season. Sophomore
Linda van Schaik was the only Warhawk in double figures with 14 points. She also led the team with six rebounds.
True freshman
Katlyn Manuel has started the last two games and has been on a tear over the last five games. She is averaging 9.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game over the first five games of the homestand. She has also accounted for 10 blocks in the stretch. She had six points, four rebounds and two assists on Saturday vs. McNeese.
Sophomore
Gara Beth Self has played well at home this season. The New Albany, Mississippi, native is averaging 10.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 35.1% from 3-point range in seven home contests. Overall, she is averaging 6.5 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 29.4% from beyond the arc.
Mississippi Valley State is 0-8 to open the season after Tuesday's 81-47 loss at Arkansas State. The Devilettes have played two games within 10 points, losing to Southeast Missouri State, 82-76, on Nov. 26 and Northwestern State, 78-71 in overtime, on Dec. 11.
Zakiya Mahoney leads the Devilettes at 13.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Mikayla Etienne follows right behind with 12.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Sarah Moore, a Georgia Southern transfer, leads MVSU on the glass with 8.0 rebounds per game. Ronni Williams paces the team with 27 assists.
ULM and Mississippi Valley State have three common opponents in Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech and Northwestern State. ULM lost to USM, 77-60, LA Tech, 64-48, and NSU, 76-72. MVSU lost to USM, 72-53, LA Tech, 69-56, and NSU, 78-71 in overtime.
